Canstruction is a charitable design-build event: teams stack full cans of food into temporary sculptures for public display, then donate the food to local hunger-relief organizations. The cans are both the building material and the eventual donation—not empty craft supplies. Canstruction describes its work as “structures made out of full cans of food” and “CanArt.”
What happens at a Canstruction event?
Teams plan and build a sculpture from food containers, usually for a public exhibition. After the display, the food is distributed to local hunger-relief organizations. The format combines design and construction with a food drive; it is not simply a sculpture contest. Canstruction’s homepage describes the exhibition as “structures made from unopened cans of food that are later donated,” attributing that description to The New York Times. Canstruction

Events can be citywide competitions, youth or university events, or custom builds for organizations. The scale, venue, eligibility, food collection method, and local rules depend on the event.

What are the rules for building a sculpture?
Rules vary by event. The 2026 handbook hosted by AIA Northern Virginia / Canstruction Capital Area applies to that region’s 2026 competition; it should not be treated as a universal rulebook. Under that handbook, structures may be no larger than 10 ft × 10 ft × 10 ft (3 m × 3 m × 3 m), no more than five builders may be in the build area at once, and teams have up to seven hours for build-out. 2026 handbook

Food and containers
That handbook allows full, unopened canned food with labels intact. It also permits beverage cans and certain food containers under specified conditions. Boxes, bags, and packets may be used, but cans must make up the majority of the structure. It excludes glass, alcohol, pet food, junk food, expired or opened food, altered labels, and empty containers. Suggested foods include low-sodium beans, no-salt-added corn and carrots, chicken, tuna, and canned fruit.
Supports and construction materials
Listed supporting materials include hook-and-loop fasteners, magnets, zip ties, tape, silicone, rubber bands, string, wire, rods, PVC pipe, and thin leveling materials, subject to the handbook’s limitations. The structure must be supported internally and externally by canned food and/or beverage cans between leveling materials. Always follow the handbook for the specific local event.

Where does the food come from?
There is no single sourcing method. Canstruction’s citywide guide says some chapters require teams to bring food; others organize food drives, buy from distributors at a discount, or seek donations from grocery stores and distributors in exchange for publicity. Food banks may help with discounted food and local outreach. The local chapter’s instructions determine which approach applies. Citywide event guide
For organizers, the guide assigns responsibility for arranging food, creating and designing structures, and donating the food to a local food bank. It says any organization may host an event, including design/build groups, food banks, charities, malls, and civic organizations. Its current page lists citywide annual registration at $950, including awards, an official manual, branding materials, an event-calendar listing, and headquarters support; fees and inclusions can change, so verify them with Canstruction before committing.

How much food does Canstruction donate?
Canstruction, Inc. reports that its competitions donated more than 1.2 million pounds of food and raised over $744,551 in 2025. In its 2024 annual report, the organization reported 1,175,471 pounds of food donated and $641,386 in cash donations. Those are organization-wide figures for the years named, not guarantees for an individual event. Canstruction homepage · 2024 annual report
The 2024 report also says Canstruction had raised more than 96 million pounds of food for hunger-relief organizations since 1992. For that cycle, it records 44 registered citywide competitions, while 25 events reported statistics involving 265 teams. The report gives differing counts for youth, university, and custom event registrations in separate sections, so those categories should not be combined into a single total.
