Krita is a free, open-source digital painting program for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is designed for painting and illustration, with tools for color management, selections and transformations, PSD file exchange, HDR workflows and Python scripting. You can use it for commercial work, and Krita says the artwork you make remains your property.
What is Krita used for?
Krita is built around digital painting and illustration. Its feature set includes selection and transformation tools, color-managed workflows, PSD loading and saving, HDR and scene-referred image work, and Python scripting. The official Krita features overview also links to training resources.
Those tools make Krita a potential fit for artists who want to paint, illustrate, or work with layered image files. They do not establish that it replaces every type of photo editor or design application; choose software according to the specific work you need to do.

Is Krita free, and can you use it commercially?
Yes. Krita’s website download is free, and the program is licensed under GNU GPL version 3. The project’s license for usage says users may use Krita for any purpose, including commercial work, and that the artwork created with it belongs to the user.
There is no registration requirement, and Krita does not need an internet connection to function. The project notes that optional startup news and store update checks use connectivity. If you distribute a modified build, the GPL has obligations: Krita says changes to distributed binaries must be made available under the license.

Free website download or paid store version?
The website download is the no-cost option. Krita is also sold through stores; according to Krita’s download page and manual, store and Steam versions are functionally identical to the website build. Paid versions receive automatic updates, and proceeds support development after store fees. The cited sources do not indicate that paying unlocks core features.

Krita’s download page currently lists these desktop requirements. They can change with future releases, so check the current download page before installing.

Krita explicitly says it does not support iPads or iPhones. Android availability is version-specific: the 5.3.4 release notes mention Android animation rendering and timelapse export, but also state that Krita 6.0.4 is not yet functional on Android. Check the release notes for the version and task you plan to use rather than assuming every build has the same Android support.

Krita’s guidance is to use any graphics tablet compatible with your operating system; it does not name an officially recommended brand or model. Before buying, check the tablet maker’s specifications for your OS and the features you want, such as a screen, pressure sensitivity, size and connection type. A tablet is optional hardware, not a brand-specific requirement for using Krita.
