The Snuggler is a sewn baby-swaddle pattern by Lotta Jansdotter, published by Make and featured in her book Simple Sewing for Baby: 24 Easy Projects for Newborns to Toddlers. Its listed finished body size is 20 × 11 inches (51 × 28 cm), plus the wrap sections. The pattern calls for medium-weight cotton, a soft lining fabric such as microfleece, and hook-and-loop tape. A sewing pattern is not a safe-sleep guarantee: follow current safe-swaddling guidance, including stopping as soon as your baby shows signs of trying to roll.

Before cutting, print the template at full size and assemble the numbered tiles. Check that the pages have printed at their intended scale. The available pattern description supports the size, materials and template features, but not a complete, reliably readable stitch-by-stitch construction sequence, so do not treat this as a substitute for the pattern’s sewing instructions.
Materials listed for the pattern
- One yard of medium-weight cotton for the outer fabric.
- One yard of a soft fabric, such as microfleece, for the lining.
- Hook-and-loop tape, placed as indicated on the template.
The one-yard quantities are the pattern’s listed requirements; actual cutting needs depend on fabric width, print layout and how the pieces fit on the cloth. The source names fabric types but does not compare brands or establish that any particular fabric or closure is safer. Choose materials that feel comfortable against the baby’s skin, and use the pattern’s placement marks rather than guessing at closure position.

Check fit and closure as you sew
The pattern’s shape includes a foot pocket and wrap flaps. When checking the assembled garment, make sure the closure holds the wrap in place without restricting the baby’s breathing or hip movement. Do not infer a safe fit from the pattern name or dimensions alone. If the finished swaddle will not stay secure, or its fit prevents free hip movement, do not use it for sleep.
The pattern’s template identifies where hook-and-loop tape belongs, but the source does not provide a brand comparison or alternative-closure recommendation. Follow the template and inspect the closure and seams before use.

Safe-swaddling guidance
- Place the baby on their back for every sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends back sleeping for every sleep.
- Stop swaddling at the first signs of trying to roll. The AAP says to stop as soon as a baby shows signs of trying to roll; do not wait for a successful roll.
- Keep breathing and hip movement unrestricted. The wrap should not be tight around the chest or prevent the legs from bending and moving at the hips.
- Do not use a weighted swaddle. The AAP advises against weighted swaddles.
- Watch for overheating. The AAP lists sweating, damp hair, flushed cheeks, heat rash and rapid breathing as signs of overheating.
A swaddle that loosens can become loose bedding and cover a baby’s face. Swaddling does not reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), according to the AAP. The fabric and construction specified by a sewing pattern cannot replace these safe-sleep precautions.
