To sew a table runner, measure your table, choose a finished size and construction, then cut fabric with the allowance that method requires. For the simplest version, sew two fabric rectangles right sides together, leave an opening, turn the piece right-side out, press it, and topstitch the edge. A quilted runner adds batting, piecing, quilting, and binding.
Choose a size and construction
Measure the table before cutting. Decide whether the runner should end at the table edges or extend past them. Spotlight suggests adding 20 to 30 cm to the table’s measured length for an overhang; this is one project’s sizing guidance, not a universal standard. Choose a width to suit your table and the look you want. Spotlight’s table-runner project offers an example of this approach.
Choose the finish before calculating your cut size: the seam or hem allowance depends on the method. Gütermann’s instructions specify a 1 cm allowance, while Utah State University Extension’s easy project uses 1/4 inch and suggests 1/2 inch at the ends for beginners. These are method-specific examples, not interchangeable rules. Gütermann’s instructions and Utah State Extension’s easy project describe their respective approaches.

Two-layer turned runner
This is the most direct option for a first project: use two fabric rectangles, sew them together, turn the piece, and topstitch. You can choose matching or coordinating fabrics. In Hobbycraft’s example, each rectangle measures 200 by 35 cm; that is an example project size, not a standard runner dimension. Hobbycraft’s instructions show the turned construction.
Pieced and quilted runner
A quilt-as-you-go runner uses a top made from fabric sections, plus backing and batting. Utah State Extension’s sample pattern has a finished size of 15 by 43 inches and calls for four coordinating fat quarters, 1/2 yard of backing, a 16 by 45 inch piece of cotton batting, 1/4 yard of binding fabric, matching thread, and a wedge ruler. Those quantities belong to that pattern; change them for a different finished size or design. Utah State Extension’s quilt-as-you-go pattern gives the sample specifications.

Gather fabric and tools
For a basic turned runner, prepare two fabric pieces, matching thread, pins or clips, a measuring tape or ruler, fabric scissors or a rotary cutter and mat, and an iron. Use a sewing machine or sew by hand with a needle. The cited project lists vary, but they include these basic measuring, cutting, pinning, and pressing tools. Sailrite’s project guide and Gütermann’s instructions list tools for their methods.
For a quilted version, add backing fabric, batting, and binding fabric; the cited Utah State pattern also uses a wedge ruler. Batting is not needed for the simple two-layer version.

Sew a basic turned runner
- Measure and cut. Choose the finished length and width, then add the seam allowance required by your chosen method. Cut two matching-size pieces.
- Pin and sew. Put the fabric pieces right sides together and pin or clip around the edges. Sew around the perimeter, leaving an opening wide enough to turn the runner. Secure the stitching at each side of the opening with backstitching if needed.
- Trim and turn. Trim excess fabric at the corners without cutting the stitching. Turn the runner right-side out through the opening, then gently ease the corners into shape.
- Press and topstitch. Press the runner flat, folding the opening’s raw edges inward. Topstitch around the perimeter to close the opening and secure the edge. Hobbycraft’s example topstitches about 6 mm from the edge; follow your chosen project’s instructions if using a different finish. Hobbycraft’s project gives that example distance.
Try pointed ends or a quilted finish
Pointed ends
Utah State Extension’s easy project creates pointed ends as part of a bordered construction. It joins the feature fabric and border/backing, turns the work right-side out, and presses the borders evenly. To form each point, match the border seams, stitch across the corner, trim excess bulk without cutting the stitches, and turn the point. Finish raw edges to reduce fraying. The project uses a 1/4 inch seam allowance at the ends and suggests 1/2 inch for beginners. See the extension’s illustrated instructions for its specific construction.
Quilt-as-you-go
Baste the batting to the backing, then sew fabric wedges onto the batting-and-backing assembly, quilting each new section as you build the top. When the top is complete, trim excess backing and batting evenly and bind the edge. The Utah State pattern uses a 1/4 inch seam for piecing. Follow its pattern for the wedge layout and assembly sequence.
