You can paint a glitter guitar by preparing the body for its existing finish, masking everything you do not want coated, applying a compatible glitter system, and letting it fully cure before reassembly. The key choice comes first: a previously painted body and bare wood need different preparation, and a clear coat that is not compatible with the glitter paint can dull the sparkle or fail to bond.

Choose a coating system for the guitar’s surface

Before buying paint, check whether the body has a sound factory finish or exposed wood. Also check each product’s label for surface compatibility and clear-coat directions. A glitter craft spray and a guitar-specific finishing system are different approaches; do not assume their primers, glitter layers, or clear coats can be mixed.

Starting surface or approach Preparation and coating guidance Important qualification
Sound, already-painted body Clean it and lightly sand the glossy finish to help the new coating adhere. Rust-Oleum advises removing contaminants and lightly sanding glossy surfaces. Confirm compatibility with the specific existing finish and glitter product. Rust-Oleum Specialty Glitter Spray support
Bare wood Use the primer or sealer system required by the glitter product. Rust-Oleum recommends primer or basecoat for bare wood; Stardust Colors specifies a 2K filling primer for raw wood in its guitar aerosol system. Those are product-specific recommendations, not interchangeable instructions for every coating. Rust-Oleum support; Stardust Colors guitar kit
Rust-Oleum glitter spray approach Use a similar-color Rust-Oleum basecoat for color and Rust-Oleum Glitter Sealer as the topcoat. Rust-Oleum says its glitter spray is for interior items only and warns that another clear topcoat may dull the glitter. Rust-Oleum Glitter Spray
Guitar-specific Stardust Colors system Its aerosol guide describes a base coat, glitter-effect paint, and two-component clear coat. Follow that maker’s preparation and safety instructions; this is one specialist system, not a general guitar-finishing requirement. Stardust Colors guitar kit

Gather materials and protect the instrument

Set up a clean, well-ventilated work area and cover the floor and nearby surfaces against overspray. Use the materials called for by your chosen coating system; the Make: tutorial’s project used glitter spray and matching clear sealer, a drop cloth, sandpaper, painter’s tape, a Phillips screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, and a respirator. That list describes one project, not a universal recipe. Make: Paint a Glitter Guitar

  • Painter’s tape and masking material for the neck, fretboard, headstock, cavities, and any hardware left in place.
  • Fine sandpaper appropriate to the coating instructions.
  • The selected glitter coating, any required basecoat or primer, and its specified compatible sealer or clear coat.
  • Respiratory protection appropriate to sanding and the products being sprayed; consult each product’s safety instructions.
  • A screwdriver and pliers only if needed for the guitar’s hardware, plus a small container to keep screws organized.

Remove strings and mask or remove hardware

  1. Remove the strings. Decide whether you can safely remove the front hardware; if unfamiliar with the wiring or parts, photograph them before disassembly.
  2. Remove a floating bridge if the guitar has one and it can be taken off safely. Store screws and small parts together.
  3. Mask the neck, fretboard, headstock, pickups, electronics, cavities, and any hardware that remains attached. Keep tape edges firmly sealed where paint must not reach.
  4. Protect the work area and position the guitar so the body can be coated without touching wet paint.

The steps above reflect practical precautions for a guitar makeover. Make: likewise recommends documenting unfamiliar components, masking the neck and hardware, and removing a floating bridge when present. Make: project tutorial

Prepare the body before spraying

Remove dirt, grease, oil, and other contaminants, then rinse if appropriate for the surface and let it dry completely. Remove loose paint. For a glossy existing finish, lightly scuff it rather than sanding through to the substrate. Bare wood needs the primer or sealer specified by the selected system; do not apply glitter directly unless the product explicitly allows it.

StewMac’s guitar-finishing course emphasizes careful sanding and masking. Sanding dust and spray coatings present different hazards, so use the respiratory protection specified for each task. StewMac aerosol guitar finishing course: preparation

Apply glitter paint and its compatible sealer

  1. Check the product label. Confirm its approved surface, application conditions, coat sequence, and drying intervals. Rust-Oleum’s support guidance specifies spraying outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, at 50–90°F (10–32°C) and below 65% humidity; use the current instructions for the exact formulation you have.
  2. Apply any required primer or basecoat. For Rust-Oleum glitter spray, the manufacturer recommends a similar-color basecoat. Other systems may call for a different primer or base color.
  3. Spray multiple light coats. Follow the can’s distance, shake time, and recoat interval. In Make:’s 2012 tutorial, updated in 2015, Brookelynn Morris describes shaking Krylon Glitter Blast for two minutes and spraying from about two feet in sweeping motions. Treat those as directions for that project and product, not universal settings.
  4. Use the specified sealer or clear coat. Rust-Oleum recommends its Glitter Sealer, stating: “For added protection, top coat with Rust-Oleum Glitter Sealer.” It warns another clear topcoat may dull the glitter. A guitar-specific kit may require its own clear-coat system; follow that maker’s instructions.

Wait for the coating to dry and cure

Do not restring, handle heavily, or reassemble until the product’s stated cure time has elapsed. Rust-Oleum lists 20 minutes to touch, one hour to handle, and 24 hours to fully dry for its Specialty Glitter Spray under reference conditions of 70°F and 50% relative humidity. It advises allowing more time in cooler conditions. Those figures are manufacturer directions for that product, not a guarantee for other coatings or for every room.

Make:’s tutorial says to apply clear coat about 20 minutes after the glitter spray and leave the guitar hanging for 24 hours before reassembly. That timing is for the tutorial’s project; the current label for your selected products takes precedence. Make: project tutorial

  • Protect nearby surfaces from overspray and mask the fretboard, neck, electronics, and hardware.
  • Check that every layer is compatible with the guitar’s existing finish or bare wood, and use only the specified clear coat.
  • Allow the full product-specific cure time before putting the instrument back into service.
