Use Inkscape to create and size vector artwork, then import it into the software that controls your laser. Before running a job, verify the SVG’s physical dimensions, text outlines, colors, layers, and placement in that software. The exact import steps and machine settings depend on your laser and controller.

What Inkscape does—and what the laser software does

Inkscape is for creating vector artwork. An SVG describes that artwork; it does not, by itself, specify universal machine-ready cutting or engraving settings. The software or controller used with the laser handles machine-specific operations and output. LightBurn describes itself as “a layout, editing, and control software for your laser cutter,” and supports importing SVG files, but not every laser uses LightBurn or accepts the same formats. See LightBurn’s overview and its supported output file types.

Prepare the Inkscape design

Set the intended physical size

Set the artwork to its intended real-world dimensions and include a simple reference shape with a known width or height. Use that shape to check the scale after import, before cutting. Inkscape’s displayed document units are an authoring convenience; SVG scale is determined by its root width and height together with its viewBox. Inkscape’s SVG and CSS reference uses 96 pixels per inch. The Inkscape units reference explains the relationship.

Decide how to handle text

If the receiving application needs the letter shapes as outlines, convert text to paths in Inkscape before exporting. This avoids relying on the receiving computer having the same font. Keep an editable copy of the design if you may need to revise the wording: text converted to paths is no longer ordinary editable text. If you keep live text, the matching font must be installed in the receiving application. LightBurn’s artwork import documentation discusses text and other SVG import behavior.

Save an SVG for applications that support it

Save or export the design in a format your laser software accepts. LightBurn supports SVG import; check the documentation for your own software and controller rather than assuming SVG is accepted everywhere. Keep the Inkscape source file as well as the file you send downstream so you can return to editable artwork.

Import the SVG and verify its scale

In LightBurn, SVG Import Settings include two DPI assumptions: 96 DPI, documented as Inkscape’s default, and 72 DPI, documented as Adobe Illustrator’s default. These are import assumptions, not laser-performance settings. LightBurn advises trying the alternate setting if an SVG imports at the wrong size. After import, measure the known reference shape and check the design’s dimensions before proceeding. See LightBurn’s SVG import settings.

  1. Import the SVG in the receiving laser application.
  2. Check the imported width and height against the intended physical dimensions, using the reference shape.
  3. If the size is wrong in LightBurn, inspect its SVG import DPI setting and try the alternate assumption.
  4. Confirm that the artwork is positioned where intended on the software’s work area.

Check paths, colors, fills, strokes, and layers

Inspect the imported artwork in the laser software instead of treating the Inkscape canvas as a guarantee of how the job will be assigned. In LightBurn, unique source colors in fills or strokes can be assigned to different cut layers; when an object has both, its stroke color takes precedence. Review the resulting layer assignments and choose the appropriate operation for each in the receiving application. A color convention in an SVG does not have a universal meaning across laser applications. LightBurn documents this behavior in its artwork import guide.

  • Confirm that the intended cut lines and engraving artwork imported.
  • Look for missing, duplicated, or unexpectedly filled paths.
  • Check each color-to-layer assignment and set the operation in the laser software.
  • Inspect the design’s placement on the work area before sending the job.

Assign operations and run the job safely

Set cut, score, or engraving operations in the application that controls your machine, following that application’s and the laser manufacturer’s instructions. The SVG workflow alone does not establish universal power or speed values, material limits, focus procedures, or safety requirements. Those depend on the machine, material, and operating conditions.

  1. Choose the operation for each imported layer in the laser software.
  2. Use the software’s preview and, where available, frame function to check the job’s path and placement.
  3. Verify the material, focus, ventilation, and safe operating procedure against the manual for your laser before starting.

How to choose the right downstream workflow

Before relying on a design-to-laser workflow, check the exact version of your laser software and your machine documentation for the details that determine compatibility:

  • Which artwork import formats and machine output formats are supported?
  • How are SVG dimensions interpreted, and can you verify size after import?
  • Do text and font information survive import, or should text be converted to paths?
  • How are colors, fills, strokes, and layers mapped to operations?
  • Does the software produce output compatible with your laser’s controller?

LightBurn’s documented SVG behavior is useful if you use LightBurn, but it should not be assumed to describe another application or every laser setup.
