What Glue Should You Use for Different Materials?

The right glue depends on both materials, their finishes, and the conditions the joint must withstand. Learn how to assess plastics, wood, metal, glass, ceramics, and adhesive cure times.

The right glue depends on both materials, their finishes, and what the joint must withstand—not just the name of the adhesive. Identify the exact substrates first, then check the product label for compatibility and preparation instructions. “Plastic,” in particular, can mean surfaces that behave very differently when bonded.

Start by identifying the surfaces and the job

Before choosing an adhesive, answer three questions:

  • What are both materials? Be as specific as possible: polyethylene and polypropylene, for example, are not interchangeable with every other plastic.
  • What is on the surface? Paint, sealant, glaze, coatings, and mold-release agents can affect adhesion. The adhesive bonds to the exposed surface, which may not be the underlying material.
  • What must the joint endure? Consider moisture, temperature, sunlight, chemicals, impact, vibration, and whether the joint needs to flex or remain rigid.

Then compare products for stated substrate compatibility, required cleaning or abrasion, working time, handling strength, full cure, flexibility, and gap-filling ability. Follow the exact product’s current label and technical data for the intended use; an adhesive-family name alone does not establish compatibility.

Why surface condition changes the answer

Plastic is not one bonding surface

3M explains that surface energy affects how readily an adhesive wets a surface. Its material-bonding guidance identifies polyethylene and polypropylene as low-surface-energy plastics that are more difficult to bond, so adhesive selection is especially important. Some engineered plastics may also carry mold-release agents that complicate bonding. Identify the resin and coating if possible, and use the preparation specified for the particular adhesive.

Wood finish and ceramic glaze matter

For wood, 3M identifies absorptivity as a basic consideration: liquid adhesive can wet unfinished wood, while tape may bond to a smoothed or sealed finish. For many industrial and technical ceramics, the bonding surface is the glaze rather than the porous ceramic beneath it. Check whether the surface is unfinished, sealed, painted, or glazed before selecting a product. See 3M’s guidance on glass bonding and traditional materials.

Clean and prepare as directed

Contamination and surface texture can affect a bond. For room-temperature-cured epoxy, 3M recommends well-prepared surfaces, including cleaning and sometimes abrasion. Do not assume that sanding, a primer, or a solvent is appropriate for every material: use only preparation methods compatible with the substrate and the adhesive instructions.

Choosing glue for common material combinations

Plastic to plastic, or plastic to another material

First identify the plastic rather than shopping for a product that merely says “for plastic.” Low-surface-energy plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene can require more critical adhesive selection than other plastics. Also check for paint, coatings, or mold-release residue. Confirm the exact resin and surface preparation against the product’s compatibility information before relying on a bond.

Wood to wood or wood to another material

For unfinished wood, consider how absorbent the surface is and whether the adhesive is intended for that kind of joint. A sealed or painted surface changes what the adhesive contacts. If bonding tape to wood, 3M’s traditional-material guidance notes that smoothing or sealing the finish may matter. For mixed-material joints, verify compatibility with both the wood finish and the second substrate.

Metal to another material

Henkel lists aluminum, steel, wood, ceramic, and plastic among the materials for its consumer product Loctite Metal Glue. The manufacturer describes it as a clear-drying gel sold in a 0.60 oz size. Those are product-specific claims, not proof that it suits every pairing, load, or exposure. Check the current instructions and compatibility labeling for the exact repair.

Glass or ceramic to another material

Do not infer compatibility from the word “ceramic” alone. A glazed ceramic presents a different bonding surface from porous ceramic, and glass is its own substrate. Confirm that the specific product names the material and surface condition you have, as well as the expected service conditions.

When epoxy may be an option

3M says epoxy adhesives can bond metals, glass, ceramics, wood, thermoset composites, some rubbers, and certain thermoplastics. That describes a range of materials across epoxy formulations; it does not mean every consumer epoxy bonds every listed material. For a room-temperature epoxy bond, 3M emphasizes preparation such as cleaning and, in some cases, abrasion. It also notes that epoxy cures more slowly than acrylic structural adhesives. Check the specific formulation’s substrate list, working time, and full-cure instructions before use. See 3M’s structural adhesives FAQs.

Handling strength is not the same as full cure

An assembly may hold together before its adhesive has reached final strength. 3M describes PUR adhesives as one-part reactive hot melts: cooling provides holding strength, then moisture curing continues for 24–48 hours to reach final structural strength. That timing applies to 3M’s PUR-family process guidance, not to glue in general. Check the product instructions for the handling time and full-cure time that apply to your adhesive.

One cited 3M PUR product, Scotch-Weld PUR Easy Adhesive EZ250150, is labeled “For industrial/occupational use only. Not for consumer sale or use.” It should not be treated as a household DIY recommendation.

Use this checklist before bonding

  1. Identify both substrates, including the plastic resin, if applicable.
  2. Identify finishes and surface conditions such as paint, sealant, glaze, or possible mold-release residue.
  3. Confirm that the exact adhesive lists both materials and the intended use.
  4. Follow its directions for cleaning, abrasion, primer, or activation; do not improvise incompatible preparation.
  5. Check open or working time, repositioning time, handling strength, and full-cure time.
  6. Match flexibility, rigidity, and gap-filling behavior to the joint.
  7. Check whether the finished bond must tolerate moisture, heat, UV, chemicals, vibration, or impact.

No single adhesive ranking covers every material pair. The product label and technical data for the specific substrates and conditions are the deciding references.
