Download free nature backgrounds from image libraries such as Pexels, Unsplash, and Pixabay, then check the image’s size, crop, and license before using it. Their collections include landscapes, forests, beaches, mountains, and other nature scenes, but “free” does not mean you can resell or redistribute an image without limits.
Where to find free nature backgrounds
These libraries are useful starting points for finding nature images. Browse the specific image page and review its current terms before using an image in a project.
- Pexels wallpapers: Browse nature categories and use orientation and resolution filters. The page offers downloads in available sizes and an “Edit in Canva” option for cropping, recoloring, or adding text.
- Unsplash Explore: Find nature imagery and wallpaper collections featuring subjects such as beaches, forests, mountains, and sunsets.
- Pixabay: Search for terms such as nature, forest, landscape, sky, or mountains, and consult its license summary for permitted and prohibited uses.
Choose a background that fits your screen
Start with the device’s orientation and aspect ratio: landscape usually suits desktop screens, while portrait usually suits phones. Pexels’ guidance, accessed in 2026, suggests 1920×1080 for most desktop screens, 3840×2160 for 4K displays, and around 1170×2532 or larger for modern phones. These are recommendations, not universal minimums; check your device’s actual display dimensions and the image’s crop.

Mountain River Sunset Backdrop Nature Landscape Photography Background Cloth, Scenic Outdoor Forest Wall Hanging Tapestry for Photo Studio, Party Décor 70.8 x 47.2 Inch
- Realistic Nature Scenery: This backdrop features a breathtaking mountain river sunset design, with vibrant golden sunrise/sunset sky, snow-capped peaks, lush pine forests, and a crystal-clear flowing stream. The high-definition, lifelike print creates an immersive, professional-looking natural environment for any setting.
- Ideal Size: Versatile size ideal for full-body portraits, small group photos, and wall coverage. Suited for photography studios, content creators, live streamers, and event backdrops for birthdays, and outdoor-themed parties.
- Premium Durable Fabric Material: Made of high-quality, wrinkle-resistant, lightweight polyester fabric. It's soft, tear-resistant, and easy to maintain—simply machine washable on a gentle cycle, quick to dry, and reusable for multiple shoots and events.
- Multi-Purpose Use: More than just a photography backdrop! Use it as a wall tapestry for living room, bedroom, or office decor, a picnic blanket, a beach throw, or a curtain to instantly transform any space into a serene mountain retreat.
- Easy Setup & Storage: Lightweight and foldable for compact storage. Easily hang it with clips, nails, or tape, or use a backdrop stand for professional studio setups. No complicated installation required, perfect for both beginners and professional photographers.
- Identify the device and its screen orientation.
- Filter or select for landscape or portrait as appropriate, then choose an image with enough resolution for the screen.
- Preview how the image crops on the device. Leave open space where icons or lock-screen text need to remain legible.
- Download from the image’s original platform page and retain the image page and license information for reference.
For a background behind text or icons, a scene with quieter areas and open space may work better than a highly detailed image. That is a design consideration, not a guarantee of readability on every screen.
What “free to use” allows—and what it does not
The platforms have different licenses, so do not assume that permission from one applies to images from another. None should be treated as a blanket “copyright-free” source. The following summarizes the official platform terms described here; check the live license and the terms attached to the specific image before consequential use.

A platform’s copyright license may not resolve every rights issue. If a nature image includes an identifiable person, a brand or logo, or artwork, separate permissions or restrictions may apply depending on how you use it. A personal wallpaper and a commercial advertisement can raise different concerns. For a consequential project, review the platform’s terms and determine whether the particular use needs additional permission.
