Happy Year of the Dragon! Lunar New Year 2024 began on February 10, 2024, marking the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese zodiac. This is a greeting for that historical celebration—not a current-year greeting.
When did Lunar New Year 2024 begin?
It began on Saturday, February 10, 2024. The date shifts from year to year because Lunar New Year typically begins with the first new moon between late January and mid-February, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
For the Chinese festivities described by the University of California, Irvine, the 2024 celebration concluded with the Lantern Festival on February 24. The Census Bureau describes the broader calendar period as the first 15 days of the first lunar-calendar month. These descriptions refer to particular calendar and community contexts, not a single schedule followed everywhere.

What does the Year of the Dragon mean?
The dragon is the only legendary animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle, notes Qian Kan of The Open University. Kan contrasts its significance in Chinese cultural contexts with the malicious-monster image common in some Western literature; neither description should be taken to represent every person’s view.
In her February 9, 2024, Lunar New Year message, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva wrote: “In many Asian cultures, the dragon is a majestic symbol of strength, courage, and prosperity.” That is an attributed interpretation, not a universal belief. A February 2024 account from the University of Colorado Boulder Center for Asian Studies likewise presents faculty perspectives: some people regard dragon years as auspicious, and speakers discuss historical associations between dragons, rain, and agricultural life.

Is Lunar New Year the same as Chinese New Year?
Lunar New Year is an umbrella term often used for observances in several communities, each with its own name, history, and customs. The U.S. Census Bureau identifies China’s Spring Festival, also called Chūnjié; Korea’s Seollal; and Vietnam’s Tết. Chinese Spring Festival is one community’s observance, not a synonym for every Lunar New Year celebration.
For the date and calendar details of a particular observance, follow that community’s framing. Customs should not be treated as interchangeable or assumed to be shared by every family or individual.

A greeting for the 2024 celebration
For a message recalling the 2024 holiday, “Happy Year of the Dragon!” is fitting. You can also name the observance more specifically—such as Chinese Spring Festival, Korean Seollal, or Vietnamese Tết—when you know which community you are greeting. The year matters: the phrase “Year of the Dragon” here refers to the 2024 Chinese zodiac year, not whichever year is current when this greeting is read.
