Our Lady of Aparecida is a title of the Virgin Mary associated with a small image venerated in Brazil. According to the traditional account, fishermen found the image in the Paraíba do Sul River in 1717. The feast is October 12, and Pope Pius XI declared her Patroness of Brazil in 1930.
Who is Our Lady of Aparecida?
Our Lady of Aparecida, also called Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida, is a Marian title linked to a small image of the Virgin Mary and to the Catholic devotion that grew around it in Brazil. “Aparecida” is associated with the image having appeared or been found.
The image became the focus of prayer and popular veneration. Devotion grew around a chapel and, over time, larger church buildings and a shrine. The Vatican’s account describes this development as a history of growing pilgrimage and devotion, rather than treating the image simply as an artwork or a historical artifact.
What is the traditional story of the image?
The traditional account dates the discovery to 1717, when fishermen were working in the Paraíba do Sul River. They reportedly drew up first the body of a small image and then its head. After they recovered the pieces, their next netting brought in an abundant catch. The image was cleaned and reassembled, then kept in a home where people gathered to pray.

The abundant catch and later reported miracles belong to the devotional narrative. Vatican sources recount these traditions, but they do not independently verify supernatural causation. It is therefore more precise to say that the fishermen’s catch was understood within the devotion as miraculous than to present a supernatural explanation as established historical fact. The Vatican’s account of John Paul II’s visit and Vatican News’ history of the devotion recount the tradition.
How did she become Patroness of Brazil?
As veneration of the image spread, a chapel was built and later replaced by larger church buildings. The image was solemnly crowned in 1904. In 1930, Pope Pius XI declared Our Lady of Aparecida Patroness of Brazil. Pope John Paul II visited the sanctuary in 1980. These milestones are part of the Catholic Church’s documented history of the devotion. The Holy See’s text of John Paul II’s 1980 homily situates the shrine within a living tradition of prayer and pilgrimage.

When is the feast of Our Lady of Aparecida?
Her feast is October 12. Vatican News identifies the date as a special holiday in Brazil and the feast of the country’s patroness. For Catholics, the day is an occasion for Marian devotion and prayer, often connected with pilgrimage to the shrine. The date is also listed as the national feast in a Catholic Church reference calendar.
What does the devotion mean to pilgrims?
The devotion centers on prayer, veneration of Mary, and pilgrimage. In his homily at the Basilica of Aparecida on July 4, 1980, John Paul II asked, “What were the ancient pilgrims seeking? What are the pilgrims of today seeking? Precisely what they were seeking on the day, more or less distant, of Baptism: faith and the means of nourishing it.” The homily commends established Catholic Marian practices, including the Rosary, as ways of sustaining faith.
