Memorial Day 2025 was Monday, May 26. The federal holiday falls on the last Monday in May and honors the women and men who died while serving in the U.S. military. If you are creating Memorial Day art, let remembrance—not just the start of summer—guide the design.
What Memorial Day commemorates
Memorial Day is a day to remember people who died in military service. The National Park Service notes that the holiday has also become associated with leisure and the beginning of summer, but those seasonal associations are distinct from its central commemorative purpose. The National Park Service’s history of Memorial Day describes how both strands developed.
Why Memorial Day falls on the last Monday in May
The holiday grew from Decoration Day, a tradition of decorating the graves of the war dead. In 1868, Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan issued General Orders No. 11, formalizing a national observance. Communities had held earlier springtime grave-decoration gatherings, and accounts of the first such observance vary; it is more accurate to describe 1868 as the formalization of the national observance than to claim one uncontested origin. The first national Decoration Day ceremony took place at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act was enacted in 1968 and took effect in 1971. It moved Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May, establishing the current calendar arrangement. The VA outlines the change and its timing.

2025 observance details
The 2025 presidential proclamation requested that Americans observe the National Moment of Remembrance beginning at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. It also requested government flags at half-staff until noon and asked citizens to display flags at half-staff during the customary forenoon period. Memorial Day art design ideas
Historical observances offer meaningful visual starting points: flowers on graves, wreaths, flags, cemetery rows, and quiet memorial scenes. The 1868 Arlington ceremony included grave decoration, flowers, flags, mourning drapery, prayer, and music. Those traditions support a range of art approaches, but they do not prescribe a modern style, color palette, typeface, layout, or medium. Choose a clear commemorative focal point

Red, white, and blue, summer flowers, or other festive touches are creative choices, not official requirements. If you use them, balance them with a visual element of remembrance so the work does not read only as a general summer-holiday celebration.

Adapt the motif to your medium
For a painting, a small floral tribute or a row of markers can establish the subject without requiring a detailed scene. For a card or poster, a flag or wreath can work as a compact central image. These are practical design options rather than historically mandated formats.
Let the tribute remain personal
Logan’s 1868 order did not prescribe a fixed ceremony: “In this observance no form or ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.” That leaves room for individual expression while keeping the work focused on honoring the dead. The VA reproduces the order.
