A Ramadan lamp is a decorative light used to mark the season at home or in public spaces. It may be a traditional-style lantern or a modern LED design; in Egypt, the familiar name for the Ramadan lantern custom is fanous. The name does not mean every lamp is made the same way—or that it is a religious object.
What is a Ramadan lamp?
“Ramadan lamp” is a broad name for seasonal lighting, often sold as a Ramadan lantern or decorative LED lantern. Designs can include metal-and-glass lantern shapes, wooden cutouts lit from within, crescent moons, mosque silhouettes, and battery-powered hanging decorations. The phrase describes a decor use, not a single standard construction.
Is the fanous a religious object?
Cairo Governorate describes the fanous as a popular Egyptian Ramadan custom that is not connected to religious rites. It is best understood as seasonal decoration and cultural tradition, rather than a required religious practice. The Egyptian Ministry of Awqaf also discusses the fanous as Ramadan art and decoration.
What is the story behind Ramadan lanterns?
There is no single settled origin story in the official accounts. Cairo Governorate recounts a tradition that people welcomed Fatimid ruler al-Mu’izz to Cairo at night with lanterns, while also presenting other explanations. It notes that there is no precise date for when lanterns became gifts for children. Treat the Fatimid story as a reported tradition, not proven historical fact.

The Governorate’s account traces the lantern’s changing form from metal containers holding candles, to metal-and-glass designs, and later to electric lanterns using batteries and bulbs. The enduring cultural association is clearer than the exact origin of the custom.

- Placement: Choose a tabletop or shelf design for a stable surface, or a hanging model if the listing specifies a hanging fixture or loop. Do not assume a tabletop lamp can be suspended.
- Material and style: Listings may describe wood, metal, or plastic, with shapes such as crescents, lanterns, or mosque silhouettes. A decorative shape alone does not establish how it is built.
- Dimensions: Check the stated height and width against the shelf, table, or hanging space. For example, Pashmation describes a hand-painted wooden crescent-and-mosque lamp approximately 12 inches tall, with a battery-powered warm LED string light.
- Light and power: Confirm whether the lamp uses an LED string, bulb, or another light source and whether it runs on batteries or another power supply.
- Battery details: Check the exact battery size and whether batteries are included. MOONCEE listings specify AA or AAA batteries for particular models; those requirements should not be generalized to other lamps.
- Intended setting: Look for an explicit indoor or outdoor designation for the exact model. Do not infer outdoor suitability, durability, brightness, or safety certification from the words “lamp” or “lantern.”
