The title “18 Free And Creative Paper Photoshop Brushes” refers to a SmashingApps roundup published on March 8, 2012. Its original brush entries and download links could not be verified, so the historical list should not be treated as a set of working downloads today. A currently indexed alternative is an 18-brush ABR paper-texture pack; check its download page and license before using it, especially for commercial work.
What happened to the original 18-brush roundup?
SmashingApps’ Brushes category lists “18 Free And Creative Paper Photoshop Brushes” with a publication date of March 8, 2012. An independent Japanese page dated June 23, 2012 also references the roundup. That distinction matters if you are looking for one of the original 18 files: a historical roundup is not proof of current availability. The exact original selections, their licenses, and their present download status are unverified.

The listing describes 18 ABR brushes in a 26.1 MB file, with paper grunge, vintage, torn, mulberry, and burnt-edge textures. It labels the resource free and for commercial use. Before downloading, check the destination page for the file and the actual license terms. A listing’s commercial-use label is useful guidance, but it is not a substitute for confirming the terms that apply to your intended project.

Choose brushes by the paper effect you need
“Paper” can mean a light surface grain or a prominent edge treatment. The indexed pack’s listed effects point to several different uses:
- Subtle surface texture: choose a texture that adds paper character without competing with the painted subject or lettering.
- Aged or vintage appearance: look for brushes described as vintage or grunge to suggest wear and discoloration.
- Irregular edges: torn-paper brushes suit collage-like compositions and cutout effects.
- Burnt or unusual paper: burnt-edge and mulberry-paper textures create a more distinctive, conspicuous surface treatment.
These are descriptions of the effects named by the listing, not a claim that every brush in the set produces all of them. Preview the available samples before choosing a pack for a particular piece.

Install an ABR brush pack in Photoshop
ABR is Photoshop’s brush-pack format. Adobe documents two ways to add a downloaded ABR file in Photoshop desktop:
- Import from the Brushes panel: in Photoshop, choose Window > Brushes. Open the panel menu, choose Import Brushes, then select the ABR file.
- Open the file while Photoshop is running: double-click the downloaded ABR file. Adobe says the brushes are added to the Brushes panel.
Adobe also describes browsing brush packs through Get More Brushes. Menu labels and behavior can vary by Photoshop version or platform, so consult Adobe’s current Photoshop brush documentation if the steps differ in your installation. The available evidence establishes Photoshop support; it does not confirm compatibility with every other image-editing application.

Check the usage terms before a commercial project
The current third-party listing says the pack is free and marked for commercial use, but the terms on the actual download destination should govern your decision. Confirm whether the license covers your particular use, including client work or distribution in a finished design. The original SmashingApps roundup’s licenses are not established, so do not assume that an old “free” label grants present-day commercial rights.
