Video game concept art can be a mood-setting environment, an early glimpse of a world’s history, or a practical exploration that helps shape a character, prop, or finished asset. The examples below show those different roles through documented game-art features and publisher descriptions. They are not a verified set of 35 images: each image’s credit and permission should be confirmed before reproducing it.

What does video game concept art look like?
It can look very different depending on the problem being explored. A concept may focus on atmosphere and broad visual direction; another may test the appearance of a character, weapon, object, or environment. The useful question is not simply whether an image looks polished, but what it communicates about the game and how it relates to development.

Where a source documents a production connection, that is distinguished from an image merely presented as part of a book.

How does concept art establish a game’s world and mood?
Deathloop: visual explorations of a world before the game’s era
An ArtStation portfolio entry for an Arkane Studios art book describes selected explorations depicting the pre-Aeon era and says they were made to set up the game’s lore. That makes the example valuable as world-building: the images offer a way to consider how visual cues can suggest a history beyond the game’s immediate setting. The portfolio context supports the lore connection, but does not establish an individual artist credit for each image. View the Deathloop art-book portfolio entry on ArtStation.
Hardspace: Shipbreaker: atmosphere alongside asset exploration
ArtStation Magazine’s feature on Blackbird Interactive discusses both mood pieces and explorations that inspired final assets, as well as technical breakdowns. That range illustrates two distinct jobs: an image can help communicate the feeling of a setting, while another can explore forms that carry through into production. The feature is especially useful for comparing evocative visual development with work that has a documented connection to final assets. Read the Hardspace: Shipbreaker feature on ArtStation Magazine.

How do artists develop a game’s visual style?
Destiny 2: The Witch Queen: a look at team practice
ArtStation Magazine’s “A Day on the Destiny 2 Concept Team” offers a process-oriented view of a concept-art team and identifies Gabriel Garza as a concept artist on The Witch Queen. It is useful for understanding that game visuals emerge through team practice, not just isolated finished images. The source does not confirm that Garza created any particular image shown in the feature, so the name should not be attached to a specific artwork without a verified credit. Compare the visual language, not just the finish
When looking across examples, note the subject, the scale, the palette, and the shapes that define the image. A broad environment study and a detailed prop exploration may both be concept art, but they answer different visual questions. For a more meaningful comparison, ask whether the source links an image to lore, mood exploration, or an asset; if it does not, describe what is visible rather than assuming the artist’s purpose.

Where can you find game concept art with artist commentary?
Art books are a useful route because some preserve material beyond finished promotional art: sketches, storyboards, interviews, and development documents. Publisher descriptions establish what the books contain, though they do not guarantee a particular image’s authorship or reproduction rights.
| Game or book | What the publisher or feature describes | Why it is useful to study |
|---|---|---|
| The Art of Ori and the Will of the Wisps | Future Press describes concept art, sketches, storyboards, artist commentary, and an interview with Moon Studios’ artistic leads. | Pairs visual development material with commentary and story-related work. Book details from Future Press. |
| The Art of FINAL FANTASY XVI | Square Enix describes a hardcover collection of full-color key art and concept sketches. | Offers a published collection combining finished key art with sketches. Book details from Square Enix. |
| The Art of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | Simon & Schuster describes a book of more than 350 pages containing previously unseen documents and illustrations, including environments, characters, concept art, and objects. | Its page count describes the book’s extent, not the volume of concept art in the game. Book details from Simon & Schuster. |
| Gears Tactics: The Art of the Game | Penguin Random House describes coverage of characters, weapons, armor, enemies, and environments. | Useful for comparing several asset categories within one game. Book details from Penguin Random House. |
| Game Art: Art from 40 Video Games and Interviews with Their Creators | No Starch Press lists a 272-page, full-color hardcover by Matt Sainsbury. | Combines art from multiple games with creator interviews. Book details from No Starch Press. |
What is the difference between concept art and final game art?
Concept art explores and communicates a visual direction before or during production; it may cover characters, weapons, props, or environments. A finished game asset is the realized in-game element. The boundary is not always a simple before-and-after: as the Hardspace: Shipbreaker feature shows, some explorations are atmospheric, while others inspire final assets. A single concept image should not be treated as proof that its design appeared unchanged in the game.

How to use this gallery as a study guide
- Identify the subject. Decide whether you are looking at a character, environment, weapon, prop, or overall mood study.
- Describe what is visible. Note palette, silhouette, lighting, scale, and atmosphere without attributing intent that the source does not establish.
- Check the production link. Separate work documented as lore or asset exploration from images presented only as art-book material.
- Compare unlike examples carefully. A mood piece and a character exploration can both reveal a game’s visual style, but they solve different problems.
- Verify image credits and permission. A portfolio page, magazine feature, or publisher book description does not itself establish permission to republish an image.
