GIMP 3.0.8 is a maintenance release focused on reliability, compatibility, and security—not a major feature update. Released January 24, 2026, it addresses font handling, WebP export, non-destructive filters, platform-specific issues, and more. It is not the current GIMP release: GIMP announced version 3.2.6 on September 10, 2026.

What GIMP 3.0.8 changes

GIMP’s 3.0 release line reserves new features primarily for minor releases such as 3.2, while 3.0.x updates focus on bug fixes. That makes 3.0.8 a targeted update for users who encounter the problems it addresses, rather than a feature upgrade. See GIMP’s 3.0 release notes.

Fonts and startup

GIMP improved startup performance for people with large font collections. It also waits for fonts to initialize before loading images, which helps prevent display problems when an XCF file references a font that is still loading. On macOS, the release specially handles the legacy Skia font because of problems with the Pango rendering library; the GIMP Team says users should be able to use all font weights rather than only Bold.

WebP export

A bug could cause a lossless WebP export to be affected by lossy settings, including a quality setting below 100%. The updated WebP plug-in prevents those settings from compromising the lossless export.

Non-destructive filters and editing tools

GIMP reports stability improvements, particularly when copying and pasting layers or images with filters attached. It also fixed issues applying non-destructive editing filters to Quick Masks. Other interface and tool fixes include aligning transform-tool overlay buttons, correcting layer-resize fill options, adjusting icon-size preferences, and disabling an unintended Search pop-up while typing with the Channels dock selected.

Platform, file, and compatibility fixes

  • Windows color profiles: GIMP corrected default color-profile paths. If an older incorrect path is already configured, you may need to reassign the default profile in Preferences.
  • Older XCF workflows: Grid color is now saved correctly in XCF files intended for compatibility with GIMP 2.10.
  • macOS: The release fixes reopening EPS and PS files in macOS packages and improves migration of GIMP 2.10 configuration to version 3.0.
  • Flatpak: Configuration handling now identifies the correct configuration directory whether or not XDG_CONFIG_HOME is defined, which the project says should ease installation and use of third-party plug-ins.
  • Other fixes: SVG import rendering paths were improved, and a rare crash in Equalize when processing images with NaN values was fixed. The affected images are usually from scientific or mapping data and uncommon in ordinary editing.

The Windows installer also no longer duplicates text in certain languages. The standard gimp-3.0 executable can now run with --no-interface, including on devices without a display, and the --show-debug-menu flag is visible.

Security and developer changes

The release announcement lists five ZDI identifiers—ZDI-CAN-28232, ZDI-CAN-28265, ZDI-CAN-28530, ZDI-CAN-28591, and ZDI-CAN-28599—along with an ICO issue involving incorrect metadata and a potential issue loading Creator blocks in Paintshop Pro PSP images. GIMP also updated librsvg to 2.61.3 to prevent a possible NTLM authentication exploit while loading a malicious SVG. The Windows installer includes a newer Python version in response to CVEs in Python 3.12.11. The announcement does not provide further severity ratings or exploit details.

For plug-in and scripting developers, the API changes include gimp_cairo_surface_get_buffer (), which retrieves a GEGL buffer from a Cairo surface and deprecates gimp_cairo_surface_create_buffer (), as well as gimp_config_set_xcf_version () and gimp_config_get_xcf_version (). The release also fixes metadata access through scripting.

How much changed—and who should consider updating?

GIMP reports that, between versions 3.0.6 and 3.0.8, the project closed 26 reports as fixed and pushed 468 commits. It also reports 12 translations updated for 3.0.8 and 28 people contributing changes or fixes to its codebase. These are figures from the project’s announcement, not independent measures of user impact.

If you use GIMP 3.0.x and have encountered one of the listed problems, 3.0.8 provides a specific reason to update. Check the Windows profile caveat if you use that platform. If you need to choose between release lines, weigh whether a listed fix matters to your workflow, your plug-ins and operating system, and compatibility requirements such as older XCF files; the release notes do not establish a universal performance gain or recommend one line for every setup.

Where to get GIMP

For current downloads, use GIMP’s official download page. The 3.0.8 announcement listed official Linux AppImage, Flatpak, and Snap packages for x86 and ARM 64-bit; a universal Windows installer for x86 32- and 64-bit and ARM 64-bit; Microsoft Store packages for x86 and ARM; and macOS DMG packages for Intel/x86 and Apple/ARM 64-bit hardware. Linux and BSD distribution packages from third parties were expected to follow. Package availability can change, so consult the official page rather than relying on an old mirror.

GIMP announced 3.0.8 on January 24, 2026, as the fourth micro-release in the 3.0 line, and said it was approaching GIMP 3.2 and might not need another 3.0 release unless a particularly serious bug emerged. The later announcement of GIMP 3.2.6 on September 10, 2026, means 3.0.8 should be understood as a release-specific update, not the latest version. Read the GIMP 3.0.8 announcement and the GIMP 3.2.6 announcement.
