Dried herbs and flowers can become fragrant potpourri and drawer sachets, or decorative wreaths, pressed pictures, wall hangings, and arrangements. For a first project, make potpourri: dry the plant material completely, blend it, then let the mixture age before displaying it or sewing it into a sachet.

Make dry potpourri
Potpourri is a mixture of aromatic dried plant materials. Choose ingredients for their scent, color, and shape. Nebraska Extension suggests possibilities such as rose petals, marigold, scented geranium, lavender, mint, other fragrant herbs, evergreen needles, spices, and dried citrus peel. Use only plant material that is thoroughly dry: residual moisture can lead to mold.

Dry and prepare the ingredients
Plant material may take a few days to a few weeks to dry, depending on conditions, according to Nebraska Extension in Lancaster County. Its guidance describes air drying and microwaving material between paper towels. Follow the source’s instructions for the method you choose, and do not mix or store the material until it is fully dry. For leaves, Penn State Extension offers a practical check: they should feel crisp and crumble easily between your fingers.

Mix and age the blend
Recipes differ. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension gives this example formula: 1 quart dried herb leaves, 1 quart dried flowers or flower parts, 1 ounce fixative, and 5–10 drops of essential oil. Mix in a non-metallic container, cover tightly, and keep the blend in a cool, dark place. UGA recommends seasoning it for about two months. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach gives a related formula and suggests using the blend after four to five weeks. Treat aging as recipe-dependent, not as one universal waiting time.
Nebraska Extension recommends storing prepared potpourri in an airtight glass container away from heat and sunlight while it ages. Once ready, display it in an open jar or bowl, or use it to fill a cloth sachet.

Turn potpourri into a drawer sachet
A sachet is a small cloth packet filled with dried herbs or potpourri for drawers and closets. A ready-made muslin bag is optional; a piece of fabric and ribbon work too.

- Gather the fabric around the filling.
- Tie it securely with ribbon. For a reusable or more finished packet, sew a small sachet instead.
Keep sachets away from children and pets, and do not ingest their contents. If someone swallows sachet material, MedlinePlus lists possible symptoms including eye irritation, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, nausea, and vomiting; contact poison control for an actual exposure. Make display pieces with preserved plants
Wreaths, garlands, and tussie-mussies
Herbs and other garden materials can be incorporated into wreaths and tussie-mussies; preserved plant materials also suit wreaths and garlands. These are useful directions to explore if you want a display piece rather than a fragrance project. The cited sources identify the project categories but do not establish a particular binding method or construction recipe.
Pressed pictures and wall hangings
Pressed plant materials can become pictures and wall hangings. Other decorative formats described by UF/IFAS Extension include arrangements, baskets, plaques, shadow boxes, greeting cards, and gift-box decoration. Choose a format that suits the plant shapes and colors you have preserved, and display the finished piece away from direct sunlight: Purdue Extension cautions that dried flowers fade quickly in bright or sunny rooms.

Dry and store materials with care
For herbs intended as craft materials, the key test is dryness; moisture can spoil a stored blend. Keep dried plant material in sealed glass containers in a cool, dry, dark place, away from sinks, stoves, windowsills, heat, and sunlight. Penn State Extension says most dried herbs keep well for up to a year as a food-storage guideline, but that is not a promise about how long a craft’s fragrance will last.

Heat reduces flavor and is unsuitable for seeds intended for planting. Those are food-storage guidance details, not a requirement for every decorative project.

Use essential oils cautiously
Essential oils are concentrated ingredients, not a harmless shortcut to stronger fragrance. Health Canada notes that natural origin does not guarantee safety and that certain oils can be harmful if inhaled, ingested, or applied to skin. It does not recommend or approve DIY uses. Keep oils away from children and pets, avoid skin contact, and do not treat a recipe containing drops of oil as safe for everyone or as a therapeutic product. For group activities, UF/IFAS advises that essential oil should not touch skin directly, potpourri should not be ingested, and children likely to mouth craft items should be closely supervised or offered another activity. Its potpourri activity guidance is intended for that supervised setting.
