A good farewell card says goodbye, names something you genuinely value about the person, and wishes them well in what comes next. Keep it brief, match the tone to your relationship, and include one detail that could not have been written for just anyone.
What to write in a farewell card
Use a simple three-part structure: a shared detail, a thank-you or expression of appreciation, and a good wish. You do not need all three parts if one or two feel more natural.
- Name a specific detail: a memory, a contribution, a quality, or something you learned from the person.
- Say what it meant: offer a sincere thank-you or explain what you will miss.
- Wish them well: mention their next step if you know it, or simply wish them happiness and success.
For a coworker, you might write: “I’ll remember how you helped us pull the launch together. Thank you for being such a generous teammate. Wishing you all the best in your new role.” Replace the example detail with something true to your experience.

For a close friend
Use the voice you normally use together. A shared memory, affectionate sign-off, or familiar joke can make the card feel personal, as long as the joke suits the circumstances.

For a colleague
Be warm and professional. Recognize a contribution or enjoyable part of working together, then offer a straightforward wish for what comes next.
For a client or someone you do not know well
Keep the message simple and polite. A brief expression of appreciation and a good wish is safer than an intimate memory or joke. The British Council’s general card-writing guidance recommends considering who will read the card, how well you know them, and the feeling you want to leave; it also advises against jokes when you do not know the recipient well. How long should a farewell card message be?
A few sincere sentences are enough for most cards. If you are unsure, prioritize one real detail over a long list of compliments. For a group card, space may be limited, so one memory, a short thank-you, or a good wish can stand on its own.

In a shared card, write a message that adds something rather than repeating the same generic goodbye. Choose one part of the formula—memory, thanks, or a wish—or combine them in a sentence or two. If several people are signing, keep your note concise so everyone has room.

Choosing a farewell card
Choose a design that fits the relationship and the reason for leaving. A personal card may suit a close friend; a restrained design is often appropriate for a professional relationship. If several people will sign, consider whether the card has enough writing space. What to avoid
- Generic praise alone: add one detail that makes the message specific to the recipient.
- Overly familiar humor: avoid jokes if you are not close or the departure may be sensitive.
- Writing more than you mean: a short, genuine note is better than a long message that feels forced.
