Notepaper is ordinary writing paper for notes, letters and personal correspondence. To choose it, start with what you will write, then compare sheet size and format; consider paper or environmental claims only to the extent they are specified and verifiable.
What is notepaper?
Notepaper is paper used for writing letters or notes and other personal correspondence. The term describes a purpose, not one standard size, ruling, finish or brand. It also sits within broader stationery and printing-and-writing-paper categories, which can include products such as note pads and stationery.
That distinction matters when shopping: a product may be sold as writing paper, stationery paper or a note pad rather than under the exact word “notepaper.” Focus on the product’s actual format and intended use.

How to choose notepaper
Match the format to the task
- Loose sheets: useful when you want individual pages for letters or general writing.
- Pad: practical when you expect to write notes on successive sheets.
- Stationery set or correspondence format: relevant when the paper is intended for personal letters; check what is included rather than assuming the term describes a particular set.
Check the dimensions
Look for the sheet dimensions in the product specification and compare them with the space you have for writing, storage and mailing. ISO 216:2007 specifies trimmed sizes for writing paper and certain printed matter; ISO reviewed and confirmed the standard in 2021 and lists it as current. That standard does not mean every notepaper product follows an ISO 216 size, so rely on the seller’s stated measurements.
Choose paper characteristics for your own use
Weight, finish, ruling and pen compatibility can matter, but there is no single universally best combination for notepaper. Check the specific product description for characteristics that matter to you, and avoid assuming that a general label such as “writing paper” guarantees a particular feel or performance.

What environmental claims mean
Recovered-fiber figures
The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends that procuring agencies specify tablet paper—including note pads, stationery and other writing papers—with 30% postconsumer fiber and 30% total recovered fiber. These are procurement recommendations, not universal legal requirements for every consumer notepaper product. A retail item’s fiber content should be established by its own product information or verified documentation.
Ecolabels and standards
The European Commission’s EU Ecolabel criteria cover defined paper product groups: unprinted paper for writing, printing or conversion, and printed-paper and stationery products that include envelopes and stationery. The criteria address responsibly sourced or recycled fibers, hazardous-substance restrictions and manufacturing considerations; the page gives their validity through 31 December 2028. This scope does not establish that a particular product is certified.

Green Seal GS-7 is another defined standard covering printing and writing paper categories such as stationery, self-adhesive note paper, notebooks and note pads. Its page identifies Edition 6.1, issued 12 July 2013, with corrections or clarifications last made on 23 August 2024. It specifies 30% postconsumer material for certain uncoated-paper categories, including writing and office paper. Check the full standard and exact product category before applying that requirement to a specific item; do not infer certification without verifying the product’s status.
