Designers can browse and restore earlier Photoshop edits through Version History when the file is saved as a cloud document. The feature is useful for managing saved states, but it is not Git-style source control: it does not provide arbitrary branches or a complete visual diff of every layer change. Keep separate local backups if you need protection beyond Adobe’s cloud history.
What Photoshop Version History does
Photoshop’s native version-history workflow is built around cloud documents. Adobe says cloud documents sync edits to Adobe cloud storage and are available across devices online and offline. In Photoshop, Version History displays saved states as thumbnails; you can identify important ones by naming or marking them, then restore a selected version or open it in a new tab.
Adobe’s current overview documents access through Photoshop’s Version History panel and the Creative Cloud web timeline. The panel helps you return to an earlier saved state; it should not be treated as a detailed change log showing exactly which layer, mask, or adjustment changed between saves.

Save a local PSD as a cloud document
- In Photoshop, open the local PSD and choose File > Save As.
- Select Save to cloud documents and complete the save. The cloud-document option, rather than simply saving to a local folder, is what places the file in this version-history workflow. See Adobe’s Photoshop cloud documents overview and desktop save instructions.
- Open the cloud document in Photoshop, then choose Window > Version History. Adobe’s overview also lists File > Version History; the available menu route can vary with the app version or platform.
- Review the version thumbnails. Name or mark useful states so they are easier to identify later.
- Use the selected version’s menu to restore it as the current version, or open the older state in a new tab if you want to inspect it without immediately replacing the current state.
Find and restore a version in Creative Cloud web
You can also select the cloud document in Creative Cloud on the web and open its timeline or version-history view. Browse the available states and choose the one you need to restore. The exact web controls can change; Adobe’s cloud documents overview describes the current access options.
Cloud history and local backups serve different purposes
| Workflow | What it is for | Restore and access | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photoshop cloud document history | Saved-state history within Photoshop’s cloud-document workflow. | Browse and restore versions in Photoshop or through the Creative Cloud web timeline. | Depends on cloud-document access, syncing, and Adobe’s current retention rules; it is not arbitrary branching or a full layer-by-layer change log. |
| Local PSD plus independent backups | Keep working files on a computer or another storage device, with separate backup copies if desired. | Use the copies or backup system you maintain; local saving alone does not create entries in Photoshop’s cloud Version History panel. | A separate copy or backup can protect against file loss, but it does not automatically provide the cloud history interface or cross-device workflow. |
For work where losing a local file would be costly, maintain a separate copy or backup in addition to cloud history. External storage can hold that backup; it is backup storage, not a substitute for Photoshop’s Version History feature.

Sync carefully when switching devices or collaborating
Moving between your own devices
Wait for the cloud document to finish syncing before continuing on another device. Adobe warns that changes made on different devices before syncing completes can create conflicts. Cloud documents can be made available offline, but offline access does not remove the need to let changes sync before switching back to another device. See Adobe’s cloud document save and sync guidance.
Working with collaborators
Adobe’s collaborative editing workflow is based on shared cloud documents. When multiple people try to edit at once, the workflow can require someone to wait or make a separate copy rather than allowing unrestricted simultaneous editing. Review Adobe’s collaborative editing instructions before choosing how a team will divide a file.
Rank #3
Storage quota is not the same as history retention
Adobe’s current help says automatic version history does not count against cloud storage quota, while versions that you mark or rename do. That quota detail does not establish how long every version remains available. Adobe’s approximately 2020 account of cloud documents described unnamed-version retention of 30, 60, or 180 days depending on Creative Cloud plan; that is historical information, not a current universal guarantee. Check Adobe’s current plan and account information for applicable retention terms.
Quick Recap
When this workflow is a good fit
- Use cloud-document history when you want to revisit saved states in Photoshop or access the document across devices.
- Keep independent backups when you need a separate copy of important work or a local-first workflow.
- Use both when you want the convenience of cloud history as well as a separate backup against loss or account and sync problems.
