PerthNow reported on 27 November 2025 that Paula Huston, a 76-year-old Perth woman, left her entire estate to the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), associated with Edith Cowan University (ECU). The report described the estate as worth “several million dollars” and said the gift is intended to support young artists and WAAPA students through scholarships; it did not give an exact valuation or a detailed allocation plan.
What PerthNow reported about the bequest
According to PerthNow’s report of 27 November 2025, Huston finalized her Will so her savings would go to young artists after she was diagnosed with cancer. The report says she died earlier that month. It identifies WAAPA as the recipient of her entire estate, but does not report probate details or a confirmed final value.
PerthNow characterized the estate as “several million dollars.” That is an approximate description in the report, not a disclosed valuation. The article does not explain how the bequest will be divided among scholarships or other forms of student support.

Huston’s earlier support for WAAPA students
The report says Huston had attended WAAPA performances for decades and had quietly donated $100,000 each year to student scholarships. Those annual donations are separate from the estate bequest: the article presents them as support she had already been providing, not as a valuation or installment of the inheritance.
Why she chose to support young artists
PerthNow described Huston as a former public servant who retired in 2009, had no children, and wanted to make a significant difference through a cause close to her heart. The article attributes to her a lifelong interest in theatre, opera, music and ballet, shaped in part by listening to her mother’s classical-record collection. It also says she won a university scholarship and lived for many years near WAAPA in Mt Lawley.

These statements describe the university and academy leaders’ view of the gift’s purpose; the report does not set out a formal distribution mechanism.
