Balcatta Primary School’s Main Street-facing mural in Balcatta, Western Australia, was created with Year 5 and Year 6 students and Perth artist Linzi Carter. Students explored ideas about community, culture, creativity and sustainability; Carter shaped their photographs and sketches into a unified design, then worked with them on the wall and completed the finishing work.
What is the Balcatta Primary School mural?
It is a large mural on the school frontage facing Main Street. PerthNow reported that the wall is about 18 metres long and two metres high. The school’s location on Main Street is also shown on its official page.
PerthNow reported that the project raised $10,000 through the school’s P&C and donations from local businesses. These are figures reported in its January 11, 2024 account, not independently audited measurements or a published budget breakdown. PerthNow’s report
How students helped shape the design
The project began with prompts around culture, creativity and sustainability. Students used iPads to take photographs in response, then developed artwork with Carter and specialist art teacher Daniela Fego. The concept centered on community and what students thought of their school.

Carter scanned the students’ work and digitally composed the mural. She described her approach as preserving the character of their ideas while bringing the finished composition together: “I illustrated their simple sketches to maintain their raw ideas whilst creating a uniform style.” PerthNow’s account of the design process and Carter’s comments
Who painted and finished the mural?
After months of planning and workshops, Year 5 and Year 6 students painted on the wall alongside Carter over two weeks. Carter then refined and finished the mural. The students contributed ideas and painting; Carter handled the digital design and professional finishing, so the result brought student artwork into a coherent mural rather than simply reproducing each sketch unchanged.
