Red envelopes are packets containing money given as a gift. At Chinese New Year, a common custom is for older family members to give them to younger relatives as a way to share affection and good wishes. The details—including who receives one and how much it contains—depend on the family and community, so there is no universal amount or rule.

What does a red envelope mean?

In Chinese New Year traditions, a red envelope holds a money gift. Shanghai’s municipal guidance explains that the custom of giving “压岁钱” (yā suì qián) to younger generations once carried a protective meaning. Today, it primarily expresses affection and wishes for health, safety, and joy in the new year. Shanghai Municipal Government guidance

The practice described here is specifically a Chinese New Year custom; it should not be taken as a description of every Asian tradition involving money gifts.

What are red envelopes called?

Hongbao is the Mandarin term, while lai see is used in Cantonese. The University of Hong Kong describes the Chinese New Year packet as a traditional money gift for children. Naming and practices vary among communities, so use the term that fits the language and context of the people involved. University of Hong Kong resource on red packets

Who should receive a red envelope?

In the New Year practice described by Shanghai’s government guidance, elders give red envelopes to younger family members. That is a common pattern, not a universal recipient list. If you are joining another family’s celebration, follow the host family’s or community’s custom rather than assuming every child—or every guest—should receive one.

How much money should you put in one?

There is no universal amount established by the sources. Consider the custom where the gift will be given, your relationship to the recipient, and what is comfortable for you. A Visit Beijing guide published on February 5, 2013, gives examples for its own context and says amounts depend on income; those dated examples are not a current worldwide standard. Do you need a physical envelope?

No. A physical red money envelope is a traditional way to present the gift, and its design or wording can vary; no single style is required. Digital red-envelope features are another option.
