Free black backgrounds are available from Pexels and Pixabay. Choose a plain black field for a clean backdrop, a texture or abstract image for visual depth, or a photograph for a scene-based background. Then match the image’s orientation and dimensions to your phone, desktop, or painting and design project—and check the source’s license before reusing it.
Choose the kind of black background you need
“Black background” can mean a solid-looking field, a visible surface, or a dark photograph. Search by both appearance and purpose to get closer to the result you want.
- Plain black background: Search “plain black background” for a minimal field with little or no visible detail. This can work as a simple screen image or as a neutral ground for a design.
- Texture or abstract image: Search “black texture” or “black abstract background” when you want visible material, pattern, or tonal variation rather than a flat-looking field.
- Wallpaper: Search “black wallpaper” for screen-oriented results, or “black background wallpaper” to browse wallpaper-specific images. Pexels also has a curated Black Backgrounds collection, and Pixabay has a black-background-wallpaper image search.
- Dark photographic scene: Search for the subject as well as the color—for example, a dark landscape or black fabric—if you need a recognizable scene or surface rather than a generic background.
Pexels and Pixabay are useful places to start. Their search pages show changing collections, not a fixed inventory or an independently tested ranking of image quality.
Match the image to your screen or canvas
Check the image’s orientation and pixel dimensions before downloading. A portrait image generally suits a phone held vertically; a landscape image generally suits a desktop monitor. For a painting or design canvas, choose proportions that fit the intended composition, or plan to crop the image.

Pexels recommends 1920 × 1080 for most desktop wallpapers, 3840 × 2160 for higher-resolution displays, and portrait images around 1170 × 2532 or larger for modern phones. These are platform recommendations, not universal device requirements. Compare them with your actual screen resolution or canvas dimensions; a mismatched image may need cropping or may appear softer when enlarged.
- Open a wallpaper or black-background search on Pexels or Pixabay.
- Search for the look you want, such as “plain black background,” “black texture,” or “black wallpaper.”
- Inspect the result’s orientation and available dimensions. Choose portrait for a portrait layout and landscape for a landscape layout where possible.
- Use the site’s download controls to select an available size that suits your screen or canvas. If you will crop the image, leave enough room around the area you want to keep.
- Before using the file beyond personal viewing, check the license for that specific source and the purpose you have in mind.
Know what “free” permits before reuse
A free download is not automatically cleared for every use. Pexels, Pixabay, and Unsplash describe different terms, so check the applicable license rather than treating the libraries as interchangeable.
