Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is observed every year on February 19 to mark the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Maharashtra Tourism gives his birth date as February 19, 1630, at Shivneri Fort; historical sources do not all agree on the birth tithi, so the date is best described as the annual observance accepted by the Maharashtra government and most historians cited by Marathi Vishwakosh.
When is Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti?
The annual date is February 19. Maharashtra Tourism identifies February 19, 1630, as Shivaji Maharaj’s birth date and Shivneri Fort as his birthplace. Maharashtra Tourism’s Jayanti page describes the observance as taking place every year on February 19.
There is a historical qualification: the Marathi Vishwakosh entry notes disagreement over Shivaji Maharaj’s birth tithi, while saying February 19, 1630, is accepted by most historians and the Maharashtra government. That makes February 19 the practical answer to the calendar question, without implying that every historical source agrees. Marathi Vishwakosh

What does Jayanti commemorate?
Jayanti means a birth-anniversary observance. Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti commemorates the birth of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whom Maharashtra Tourism describes as the founder of the Maratha Empire and as a ruler, administrator and military leader. The state tourism page also frames the day as part of Maharashtra’s cultural identity.
It is distinct from coronation observances. Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation took place in 1674; events marking that occasion are not alternative dates for his birth anniversary.

How is Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti celebrated?
Programs vary by place and year. Maharashtra Tourism reports public rallies and parades, storytelling, plays, historical displays, and events at forts such as Raigad, Shivneri and Sinhagad. It also describes cleanup and heritage-preservation activities. These are examples of reported observances, not a guaranteed schedule for every town or fort.
Government events can span multiple days and locations. Two 2026 examples show why it is worth checking local announcements:

Planning to attend a fort event?
Fort-based programs can be part of the observance, but an event listing does not establish current opening hours, transport arrangements, access conditions, crowd controls or safety rules. Confirm those details with the relevant local authority or organizer before travelling, and check the year-specific program rather than assuming an event will recur on the same schedule.
