Eid refers to two distinct Muslim holidays: Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, observed during the Hajj season. Both bring communities together for worship and celebration, but they have different places in the Islamic lunar calendar and different associated observances. Their Gregorian dates can vary by country or community.
What does Eid mean?
“Eid” is commonly used for either of Islam’s two major festivals. The name alone does not identify which one is meant, so the surrounding date or reference to Ramadan or Hajj can help distinguish them.

What is Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. It begins with Shawwal, the month that follows Ramadan in the lunar Hijri calendar. It is often called the Feast of Breaking the Fast. An Eid prayer is an important shared observance. Families and communities may also gather for festive meals, visit one another, give gifts or charity, and exchange greetings such as “Eid Mubarak.” Customs differ, and these examples are not requirements followed identically by every Muslim. Le Monde’s Eid al-Fitr explainer describes the holiday and associated customs.
What is Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Adha, often translated as the Feast of Sacrifice, falls on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah. It recalls Ibrahim’s devotion and willingness to obey God. The holiday takes place in the same lunar-calendar season as Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Makkah and one of Islam’s five pillars for those able to undertake it. Eid al-Adha is closely linked to Hajj, but Muslims celebrating the holiday are not necessarily pilgrims. Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta explains the religious context of udhiyyah, the sacrifice associated with the occasion. Its timing and detailed rulings, including who is expected to offer one and how, may depend on religious authority and circumstance.

An Eid prayer is also an important observance for Eid al-Adha. Ritual details, including takbir recitations, can differ between the two Eids and between authorities. The Türkiye Directorate of Religious Affairs’ educational page describes the prayer and notes differences in takbir practice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do Eid dates differ by location?
The Hijri calendar is lunar, and the Gregorian date depends on when the new lunar month begins. Authorities may use crescent observations and their own procedures to announce that start. As a result, communities in different places may observe an Eid on different Gregorian dates; there is no single date that applies worldwide.

For example, Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court and Bahrain’s Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs both announced Eid al-Fitr for March 20, 2026, following decisions that no Shawwal crescent sighting had been established in their respective processes. Those were jurisdiction-specific announcements, not a universal ruling. Saudi Arabia’s announcement and Bahrain’s announcement document their decisions.
For Eid al-Adha in 1447 AH, Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court set the start of Dhul-Hijjah as May 18, 2026, Arafat Day as May 26, and Eid al-Adha as May 27. The Philippines declared May 27 a regular national holiday, and Indonesia’s 2026 schedule also listed May 27 for Eid al-Adha. These examples show that several countries announced the same Gregorian date for that year; they do not establish a fixed or global date for future Eids. See Saudi Arabia’s calendar announcement, the Philippine holiday declaration, and the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs schedule.

How to find the date for your community
- Identify whether you mean Eid al-Fitr, after Ramadan, or Eid al-Adha, in Dhul-Hijjah during the Hajj season.
- Check the announcement from the religious authority or community your local mosque follows. The Gregorian date may depend on that authority’s lunar-month procedure.
- For public closures or time off, check your own country or local government’s holiday notice; an observance date and a statutory holiday declaration are not the same thing.
