Happy Gudi Padwa! This Marathi New Year is observed on the first day of Chaitra in the Hindu calendar, with celebrations across Maharashtra centered on a decorated gudi, home observances and festive food.
What is Gudi Padwa?
Gudi Padwa marks the beginning of the Marathi New Year. It falls on Chaitra’s first day, during the moon’s waxing phase, so its Gregorian date changes from year to year. Maharashtra Tourism and Maharashtra Sadan describe the festival’s place in the calendar and its observance in Maharashtra.

How is Gudi Padwa celebrated?
Celebrations can be private and household-centered or part of a public gathering. The elements below are described traditions, not a required sequence or a checklist every family follows.
At home: raise a decorated gudi
A gudi is a decorated pole displayed outside a home. Maharashtra Tourism describes a bamboo stick dressed with silk cloth, flowers, neem leaves and a sugar garland, topped with a silver or copper pot. The Ministry of Tourism’s Utsav portal also describes cloth tied around a bamboo pole. Materials and decoration can vary by household; these descriptions are not a universal specification. Utsav’s Gudhipadwa overview provides another description of the gudi.

At home: prepare and pray
Some households clean and decorate their homes, make rangoli at the entrance, and offer prayers and prasad. Festive foods mentioned by Maharashtra Tourism include puran poli, shrikhand and basundi. It also describes eating neem with jaggery. Families may observe the day differently, so these customs should not be taken as a single prescribed ritual.

How Gudi Padwa relates to Ugadi
Gudi Padwa is associated with the Marathi New Year in Maharashtra. Maharashtra Sadan notes that a related new-year observance in some South Indian states is known as Ugadi. The connection is regional and calendar-related; it does not mean that the festivals share every custom.
