An Onam pookalam is a floral design laid on the ground as part of Kerala’s Onam celebrations. Kerala Tourism describes it as a welcoming decoration associated with Mahabali and as a symbol of prosperity and joy. Some households build the design over successive days; the flowers, shape and rituals differ by region and family.
What a pookalam means
The word refers to a floral arrangement or carpet made for Onam. Kerala Tourism describes pookalam as a familiar feature of the festival and says it is believed to welcome Mahabali, the legendary king associated with Onam. The authority calls an Athappookkalam “symbolic of prosperity and joy.” Kerala Tourism’s pookalam guide presents this as a cultural tradition, not a single prescribed design.
A pookalam is often round and formed from colourful petals, but roundness is not a requirement. Some interpretations associate its rings or circular steps with ten deities; this is one interpretation, not a universal rule. Designs can also take other forms, including the square Moolakkalam described in Kerala Tourism’s account.
How the design changes during Onam
In the day-by-day custom described by Kerala Tourism, pookalams begin on Atham and grow in size and variety as the festival approaches. The details below represent that account; households and regions may observe different practices.

A separate Kerala Tourism article published in August 2021 describes flower variety increasing through the days and reaching ten different flowers on the final day. That is the article’s description of a tradition, not a count followed by every household.
Regional customs and different forms
Kerala Tourism documents a North Kerala form called Mathevara, in which figures of Maveli, Thrikkakarappan and Shiva are placed at the centre. Its guide also describes offerings to Thrikkakarappan and says rituals generally end by Chathayam. These details concern the custom described by the source and should not be assumed to apply across Kerala.

Likewise, a clay pyramid-shaped Thrikkakarappan at the centre is a specific practice associated in the guide with Thiruvonam; it is not a necessary component of every pookalam. A household may follow a day-by-day design, make one display for a particular occasion, choose a round or another shape, or follow its own regional and family custom.

Kerala Tourism lists flowers and plants used in pookalams, including familiar local varieties and flowers brought into Kerala for the Onam season.

The tourism authority’s Onam flower-market page also names dalia, chendumalli, arali and roses as flowers sourced from other states to add colour. The page says cultivation in other states covers over 1,000 acres for Onam-season flower-market sales, but gives no publication year for that figure; it should not be read as a current measured total.

Kerala Tourism describes pookalams as traditionally laid in the front yard and recounts customary preparation of the ground. That is a description of tradition, not a requirement for a modern home. Its sources do not establish a universal construction method, fixed quantities, standard dimensions or flower-preservation instructions.
