The Vietnam flag is a red rectangle with a centered five-pointed gold star. Its width is two-thirds of its length, giving it a 2:3 width-to-length ratio. Official descriptions and historical records clarify the design, but do not establish technical print colors or a complete official explanation of the flag’s symbolism.
What does the Vietnam flag look like?
The national flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam has a red rectangular field and a bright, five-pointed golden star in the center. That description and the flag’s proportions appear in the Vietnam Government Portal’s national-symbols page.

The portal attributes its wording to Article 141. A 1955 presidential order describes the field as bright red and the star as bright yellow. These are descriptive color terms, not standardized production specifications.
Proportion and star shape
The flag’s width equals two-thirds of its length. For example, a flag 90 cm long would be 60 cm wide. Presidential Order 249/SL, issued on 30 November 1955, specifies that the star’s points are straight rather than curved. The order and its annex are available in the National Legal Database of Vietnam.

What do the colors and star mean?
The official descriptions cited here identify the field as red and the star as golden or yellow, but do not provide an authoritative account of what the colors or the star’s points represent. Interpretations sometimes given elsewhere should not be treated as official symbolism unless supported by an authoritative source that states it directly.
Likewise, the legal descriptions use words such as “bright red” and “bright yellow” rather than RGB, CMYK, Pantone, or other technical color values. Anyone reproducing the flag for print or manufacturing cannot derive a precise color match from these descriptions alone.

When was the flag adopted?
The Embassy of Vietnam in the United States says the first National Assembly affirmed the red flag with a five-pointed star as the national flag on 2 March 1946. This is the embassy’s account of the event; the statement is available on its National Flag page.
The historical context is broader than the flag’s adoption. The preamble to the 1992 Constitution, amended on 25 December 2001, records the declaration of independence on 2 September 1945 and the adoption of the name Socialist Republic of Vietnam on 2 July 1976. The constitution places the flag alongside the national emblem, anthem, capital, and national day. The amended text is published by the National Legal Database of Vietnam.
