Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It is not Mexican Independence Day: Mexico celebrates independence on September 16. The anniversary has a specific historical meaning in Puebla, while U.S. observances often use the day to celebrate Mexican American culture.
What does Cinco de Mayo celebrate?
The date marks the Battle of Puebla, fought on May 5, 1862, during the French intervention in Mexico. Mexico’s National Institute of Historical Studies (INEHRM) identifies General Ignacio Zaragoza as commander of the Mexican Army of the East and Charles Ferdinand Latrille, Count of Lorencez, as commander of the French forces. The Mexican victory was a significant setback for the invading army.

Is Cinco de Mayo Mexican Independence Day?
No. Mexico’s Independence Day is September 16. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla, not the start of Mexican independence. The distinction is also explained in the Associated Press’s 2024 overview of the holiday.

Why is Cinco de Mayo widely celebrated in the United States?
In many U.S. communities, the occasion has grown into a celebration of Mexican American culture as well as a commemoration connected to the Battle of Puebla. The form varies by community: Associated Press reporting describes events such as parades, street food, block parties, mariachi competitions, and folklórico dancing. These examples do not mean that every Mexican American community observes the day, or that one kind of celebration is more authentic than another. The AP’s 2024 account contrasts U.S. festivities with the date’s more specifically regional observance in Mexico.

What food is associated with Cinco de Mayo?
There is no required Cinco de Mayo dish. Food traditions depend on the people and place celebrating. In 2026, the Associated Press reported on U.S. restaurant owners using the occasion to highlight traditional Mexican cooking, including guisados—prepared dishes or stews served in different ways. A meal can be one way to mark the day, but food, alcohol, costumes, and party decorations are not prerequisites. The AP’s 2026 reporting offers examples of restaurants using the date to share food and community traditions.
