For a free cartoon background, start with searchable illustration and vector libraries, then check the license on the exact file you plan to use. Before downloading, make sure its format, dimensions, and aspect ratio suit your project. A site-wide “free” label does not establish the reuse terms for every asset.
Where to find free cartoon backgrounds
Browse illustration and vector collections
Pixabay’s cartoon-background illustration search and vector search are broad starting points. The illustration and vector pages represent different kinds of results, so check which collection you are browsing and open the individual asset to review its details. Search counts can change over time and are not a measure of how many images are suitable for your project.
Look at game-art and themed asset packs
For game projects, an individual repository entry can offer clearer information about files and licensing. OpenGameArt’s “Cartoon backgrounds” by DeadKir, dated March 28, 2019, describes three forest-and-mountain backgrounds, lists PNG files, and labels the item CC0.

It is a themed UI pack rather than a general-purpose collection, so judge it against the needs of your project.
Check the license before using an image
Read the terms attached to the exact asset or pack you download. Pixabay’s search pages describe results as free or royalty-free, but that collection-level wording does not establish the license for every individual image. The OpenGameArt entry cited above specifically labels its item CC0. Colorosse labels Aqua Backdrops CC BY 4.0 and states that commercial use is free with credit required.

For Aqua Backdrops, the suggested credit names Oğuzhan Girgin. Follow the asset page’s credit guidance and keep a copy of the license and creator information with the downloaded files. For any asset, review its complete terms before commercial use, redistribution, or adaptation; do not assume that another image on the same site has the same license.
Choose a format that fits your workflow
- PNG: a raster image made of pixels, convenient when you want a ready-to-place file. OpenGameArt’s cited game-art entry lists PNG files.
- SVG: a vector format that can be edited and resized cleanly in compatible software. Aqua Backdrops includes SVG sources as well as transparent PNG exports.
These options illustrate the difference between an individual game-art download and a packaged interface asset; they are not interchangeable collections. Confirm that the specific download includes the format and transparency you need before planning around it.

Match dimensions and aspect ratio to the destination
Check the artwork’s pixel dimensions and shape against the screen, canvas, or layout where it will appear. Cropping or fitting an image can change which parts remain visible; stretching it to fill a different shape can distort the artwork.
Colorosse describes Aqua Backdrops’ full-screen background as 16:9, with a 640 × 360 source and a 2560 × 1440 4× export. Its page recommends a cover fit rather than stretching. Those figures and instructions apply to that named pack, not to cartoon backgrounds generally.
