The Coast is a photobook by Magnum photographer Sohrab Hura, developed from his longer project The Lost Head and the Bird. Made along India’s coastline, its photographs and a surreal story—retold in twelve subtly changing versions—explore violence, power and the narratives through which people interpret events. It is an ambiguous artwork, not a statistical survey or a record that verifies the circumstances behind every image.
What is The Coast about?
Magnum Photos describes The Coast as the latest iteration of Hura’s ongoing project The Lost Head and the Bird. The book brings together photographs made along India’s coast and a fantastical story about Madhu, a woman whose head has been stolen by her obsessive lover. Magnum’s project page and interview describe religious, sexual and caste-related violence as undercurrents in the work.
Those themes are approached through a constructed narrative rather than a conventional documentary account. Hura has said he is interested in power as it operates through stories that are generated and manipulated, with violence one immediate manifestation. In an interview with The Indian Express, he also places the photographer among the people implicated in Madhu’s story. That framing asks viewers to consider not just what is shown, but who shapes a narrative and who bears responsibility for it.
Why does the story appear twelve times?
The short story is repeated in twelve versions, with small changes in wording. Hura has explained that these gradual shifts alter how readers distribute empathy and responsibility. Rather than supply one stable explanation, repetition makes the reader notice how small changes in a telling can change a judgment.

The photographs are unsettled in a similar way. Magnum describes changing image pairings, while The Guardian’s 2019 account notes repeated images and jarring juxtapositions. Individual pictures may be difficult to read on their own; their sequence and relation to the evolving story shape how they feel together. Hura has described photography’s “malleability and multiplicity of existences and meanings” in his Magnum interview.
How does the book differ from the film?
The Coast and The Lost Head and the Bird are related but distinct forms of the project. Magnum’s description distinguishes the book’s emphasis on Hura’s photographs and changing text from the film’s use of found footage alongside his photographs.
Rank #2
| Form | Material and treatment | Pace and effect |
|---|---|---|
| The Coast (book) | Hura’s photographs paired with the changing story | Slower and gentler; image sequence and textual variation invite sustained attention |
| The Lost Head and the Bird (film) | Hura’s photographs combined with brutal found footage | More urgent, building toward a frantic crescendo |
These differences make the book and film separate encounters with the material, not interchangeable editions of one definitive account. A 2024 New York Review of Books essay discusses the later video work and its use of online and WhatsApp material; that discussion concerns the wider project, not the book’s current availability.
How should readers understand its treatment of violence?
The project’s concerns should be attributed to the artwork and to Hura’s stated interests, rather than generalized into claims about how often violence occurs in India or what causes it. The book offers a deliberately unstable visual narrative about power, violence and interpretation; the sources describing it do not establish the circumstances behind every pictured scene.
Rank #3
Hura’s approach makes the act of looking part of the subject. When images can be rearranged and a story’s wording changes incrementally, viewers must reckon with how framing affects their response. The work’s ambiguity is an artistic strategy, not evidence that it documents or measures specific incidents.
