For a broad Impressionist collection, start at the Musée d’Orsay; for Monet’s Water Lilies, go to the Musée de l’Orangerie. The Musée Marmottan Monet offers a more focused Monet visit, while the Musée de Montmartre adds neighborhood context rather than a comparable Impressionist collection. The available evidence supports these four stops—not a defensible fifth museum or an objective top-five ranking.
Which Paris stop is right for you?
| Stop | Best for | Place in an itinerary |
|---|---|---|
| Musée d’Orsay | A broad Impressionist gallery experience | The strongest starting point for seeing Impressionism across a museum visit |
| Musée de l’Orangerie | Monet’s Water Lilies | A focused visit that can be paired with Orsay |
| Musée Marmottan Monet | A Monet-centered visit, including works by Berthe Morisot on the Paris Region itinerary | A separate museum stop; the tourism board suggests about 1.5 hours |
| Musée de Montmartre | Neighborhood and artists’ milieu | Context for an Impressionist-era Paris itinerary, not a proven top-tier Impressionist collection |
Musée d’Orsay: the broad collection anchor
Choose Orsay when you want a substantial Impressionist gallery experience rather than a single-artist destination. Its official visitor page identifies the Impressionists gallery on the fifth floor, with Café Campana at the gallery’s exit. Paris Region’s 2026 brochure calls it “the world’s leading Impressionist collection”; that is the tourism board’s promotional characterization, not an independently established ranking. Check Orsay’s official visitor page for current tickets, opening arrangements and access conditions.

The page lists Monday closure and Thursday late opening until 9:45 p.m. Last admission is listed as 5:00 p.m. on ordinary days and 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays. It also notes that renovation work is underway and asks visitors to check access conditions. At the time the page was accessed, full admission was listed as €16 online and €14 on site; prices and arrangements can change, so confirm them for your date.
Musée de l’Orangerie: go for Monet’s Water Lilies
If the Water Lilies are your priority, the Orangerie is the direct choice: its official visitor page identifies the paintings as a central part of the visit. The same page lists Tuesday closure and Friday late openings during exhibition periods. Last admission is listed as 5:15 p.m. ordinarily and 8:15 p.m. during the Friday late opening. Timed booking is recommended, including for visitors eligible for free entry. Confirm hours, admission and booking details with the Orangerie before setting out.
#1 Best Overall
The official page listed online general admission at €12.50 and a combined Orsay–Orangerie ticket at €20 when accessed; treat both as date-sensitive, not guaranteed current prices. The combined ticket makes a same-day visit an option, but whether it suits you depends on how long you want at each museum and the access conditions on your visit date.
A dated exhibition is also listed as “Monet: Painting Time,” running from 30 September 2026 to 25 January 2027. Paris je t’aime Official Ticketing describes nearly 40 works tracing Monet’s motifs from Haystacks, Poplars and Rouen Cathedrals to Water Lilies. It is a temporary exhibition, not part of the permanent visit by definition; check the listing for dates and availability. See the exhibition listing.
Rank #2
Musée Marmottan Monet: a focused Monet visit
Marmottan is the natural alternative if you want a museum visit centered on Monet. The Paris Region Tourism Board’s 2026 itinerary recommends it for works by Claude Monet and Berthe Morisot and suggests about 1.5 hours. That is itinerary guidance, not a measured average visit time. Check Marmottan’s admission page for current opening hours, timed online entry, on-site ticket purchase and audioguide details; online tickets require a selected entry time.
The museum also describes Myse, an optional mobile service for creating a personalized visit catalogue, available digitally or in print. It is a practical extra for visitors who want a tailored record of a visit, not a requirement for seeing the collection.

Musée de Montmartre: add the neighborhood, not another collection claim
Montmartre belongs on an Impressionist-themed itinerary for its neighborhood and period context. The Paris Region itinerary recommends the museum and vineyards as a stop, but the available information does not establish it as equivalent to the three collection-focused museums above. Find visitor details, including address, routes and admission, on the museum’s practical information page.
Accessibility needs particular attention: the museum says temporary exhibitions are accessible by lift, while access to the permanent collection may be more difficult for wheelchair users because of paving, small steps and stairs. Verify conditions directly against your needs and the planned visit.
Rank #4
How to plan the visits
Pair Orsay and the Orangerie if both are priorities
The combined ticket makes visiting both in one day possible, but it does not determine a comfortable pace. Decide in advance whether Orsay’s wider collection or the Water Lilies deserves the larger share of your time, then check each museum’s live hours, last admission and access notices. Their different closure days and late-opening schedules can affect which day works.
Reserve around entry times and current conditions
- Check Orsay’s official page for timed-ticket arrangements, renovation-related access changes and current prices.
- Check whether the Orangerie requires or recommends timed booking for your type of admission; its page recommends booking even for free-entry visitors.
- Select an entry time for Marmottan online tickets and verify the schedule for your visit date.
- For Montmartre, review routes, admission and accessibility information before choosing it as a stop.
Why this guide names four stops, not five
The available sources substantiate three collection-focused destinations—Orsay, the Orangerie and Marmottan—and one contextual neighborhood stop in Montmartre. They do not support naming a fifth museum as one of Paris’s “top” Impressionist museums. Treating other Paris art museums as a fifth choice without evidence would blur the distinction between a relevant museum and a demonstrably Impressionist-focused stop.
