Nate Berkus recommends beige as a timeless choice for modern homes. The appeal, as he describes it, is its flexibility: a warm, understated backdrop lets clean-lined furnishings and carefully chosen decor provide contrast.
Why does Nate Berkus recommend beige?
In a Hunker article published November 16, 2024, Jillian Chapman attributes the recommendation to Berkus, an interior designer, in an interview with Homes and Gardens. The article quotes him: “Beige is so timeless, which is why we chose ‘Even Better Beige’ as one of the room colors. It can be paired with almost anything and will always look handsome,” said Berkus in an interview with Homes and Gardens. His design rationale is versatility rather than a claim that beige suits every room. Against the clean lines and functional forms associated with modern interiors, a warm neutral can make a calm foundation while furnishings, artwork, textiles, and objects add definition.
Which kind of beige works with a modern interior?
The Hunker article distinguishes current beige from older shades that leaned more yellow: contemporary beige is described as warmer and creamier. It also notes beige-gray tones as an option for a more nature-inspired feel. These are useful undertone distinctions when narrowing a paint choice, not a comparison of paint formulas or a guarantee of how a color will appear in a particular room.
