Bangladesh’s poultry sector needs to earn more reliably from what it produces—not simply produce more. That was the central argument at the International Technical Seminar 2026, where speakers called for stronger farm profitability, food safety, resilience and value addition. Their proposals are recommendations, not evidence that the changes have been adopted or that any one measure will guarantee higher returns.
Why speakers say output growth is not enough
The seminar, organized by the World’s Poultry Science Association–Bangladesh Branch (WPSA-BB) under the theme “Resilient Poultry Production for Global Competitiveness,” brought together eight speakers from government, industry and academia. Department of Livestock Services Director General Md Shahzaman Khan attended as chief guest, according to the Dhaka Tribune report published 5 October 2026.
WPSA-BB president Shamsul Arefin Khaled said that “while the sector has addressed volume growth, it has yet to secure value realization.” In practical terms, producing more birds or eggs does not by itself ensure that farms receive a sustainable share of the value generated along the supply chain.
Khaled estimated that breeder farms had lost approximately Tk1,706 crore over the preceding 20 months, and argued that profit margins had moved away from farms and hatcheries toward intermediaries. These are his estimates and analysis as reported by the newspaper—not independently audited, sector-wide accounts.

What a shift from volume to value means
Value realization is broader than increasing output or charging a higher price. It concerns whether poultry businesses can turn production into dependable returns while maintaining food safety and managing risk. The seminar speakers pointed to several possible levers, but the report does not provide outcome data proving that any one of them will improve farm income.
- Match supply with demand: Khaled urged aligning chick supply with market demand, a proposal intended to reduce the risk of costly mismatches between production and sales.
- Protect farms against shocks: He called for investment in insurance. The report does not establish what coverage is available, who would qualify or how it would be implemented.
- Keep more value in the chain: Khaled recommended investment in processing and cold chains. These can create ways to handle and market products beyond the sale of live birds, but the seminar report does not quantify what farmers would earn from them.
- Improve operating performance: Speakers discussed feed conversion, energy management, mortality reduction and operating costs. These are potential efficiency concerns, not demonstrated results from the event.
- Build confidence in products: Traceability and food-safety practices can help document how poultry is produced and handled; their commercial effect depends on implementation and buyer requirements.
Feed and farm management are part of the margin problem
Feed is a major cost pressure. A 2023 Bangladesh poultry-sector study by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) attributed roughly 70% of total poultry production costs to feed in its discussion of feed milling. That is the study’s estimate, not a new measurement for 2026. It also described reliance on imported ingredients, alongside some local sourcing of corn and soy, and constraints among small and midsized feed producers involving knowledge, equipment, formulation, storage and quality. See the RVO’s 2023 Bangladesh poultry sector study.
Feed efficiency matters, but the seminar cautioned against treating a single production metric as a proxy for profit. Md Zahidul Islam, director and CEO of Bangla-UK Agro Products Ltd, said “the lowest FCR does not always yield the highest profitability.” Feed conversion ratio (FCR) measures feed used relative to weight gain; farm returns also depend on costs, mortality, sale conditions and other operating factors. The report supplies no trial data or conditions that would establish when a particular FCR or management choice is most profitable.

- HATCHERY'S CHOICE: Give your brooder-raised chicks a great start with Hatchery Preferred Excelsior Bedding. This aspen excelsior, commonly used by hatcheries for chick transport, offers a better footing for your little ones.
- LOW DUST COMFORT: Keep your chicks safe and comfortable with Excelsior Brooder Pads. These pads have a low dust content, unlike pine, cedar, and other wood shavings, to provide a healthier environment for your chicks and reduce the risk of respiratory issues.
- HELP CHICKS THRIVE: Keeping Feeders & Waterers Clean is Essential for Their Growth. Unlike Pine Shavings, Excelsior Fibers Prevent Mess & Keep Food and Water Accessible All Day.
- EASY TO KEEP BROODERS CLEAN: Conveniently keep your brooders clean with Excelsior Brooder Pads. Simply remove and replace soiled pads as needed for easy maintenance.
- HOW TO USE BROODER PADS: Each pad measures 12" x 9". Simply place as many layers as needed to fill the entire brooder area. The excelsior fibers can be fluffed and expanded to cover the corners for complete coverage.
The RVO study also identifies chick quality, feed, water, medication, hygiene, heating, ventilation, catching, transport and data management among factors associated with farm management and mortality. This makes everyday management relevant to productivity, but it does not show that any single tool or intervention guarantees profit.
Food safety and processing can add value—but require execution
Islam said strict observance of drug withdrawal periods and marketing heavier birds could improve farm income as well as food safety. Those are his remarks at the seminar; the report does not provide trial results or specify the conditions under which heavier birds would be commercially advantageous. Withdrawal periods are important because medicines must be used according to applicable directions and food-safety requirements; the seminar coverage does not set out a specific regulatory standard.
Processing is another proposed route to value addition. A 2024 review by Hashem, Sarker, Nurul Alam, Mia and Rahman in Meat Research examines poultry processing and further processing in Bangladesh, product options and ways to improve value addition for domestic and export markets. It does not provide a quantified causal estimate of how processing changes farm-gate prices or farm profitability. Processing and cold-chain investment may expand product-handling options, but who captures the resulting value depends on how the chain is organized.

Khitima Jindamongkon, APAC regional manager at dsm-firmenich, highlighted integration, processing, traceability and the use of local breeds such as Sonali chicken. These were strategic directions raised by a speaker, not evidence that a particular production model or breed will deliver higher returns in every setting.

Policy, resilience and the export ambition
Khaled urged giving the national poultry policy legal status and expanding investment in insurance, processing and cold chains. Fayzur Rahman, WPSA-BB general secretary, outlined a strategic direction focused on farmer protection and a sustainable industry, though the newspaper report did not detail specific proposals under that description.
A Daily Star report on a new poultry policy summarizes aims involving production, feed self-sufficiency, breeds, animal health, vaccines, disease surveillance and antibiotic use. That summary does not establish the policy’s detailed legal provisions or implementation status.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported in April 2026 that the government aimed to make the poultry sector export-oriented by 2030. This is a stated ambition, not proof of current export readiness, achieved export status or guaranteed access to overseas markets. Meeting buyer requirements would depend on standards, food safety, traceability, processing and other conditions; the seminar report does not specify a verified export standard or demonstrate compliance.
The same BSS report quoted State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku giving an example in which an egg cost around Tk9 to produce while farmers sold it for about Tk7. He warned: “If small farmers cannot sustain themselves, the entire sector will be at risk.” The price figures are a reported example, not a validated national average.

How to judge the proposed changes
The seminar did not compare strategies using measured outcomes. For policymakers and poultry businesses assessing possible steps, useful questions include:
- Farm-level margin: Is there evidence the change would improve what farms retain after costs?
- Value capture: Would added revenue reach farmers, or mainly processors and intermediaries?
- Investment and operating burden: What capital, skills and recurring costs would be required, especially for smaller farms?
- Food safety and traceability: Would the change improve the ability to manage medicines, handling and product records?
- Resilience: How would it affect exposure to disease, price volatility and climate-related disruption?
- Implementation: Is the proposal funded, available and operating, or is it still an ambition?
That distinction matters: better production efficiency, processing capacity or export plans do not automatically translate into stronger farm finances. The central test is whether changes improve reliable value capture at farm level while supporting safe, resilient production.
