Carnovsky’s RGB wallpaper is an art project by the duo Francesco Rugi and Silvia Quintanilla, not a digital desktop background. It layers colored imagery so that the wall looks dense and entangled in ordinary light; colored filters or illumination bring different parts of the composition forward. The result is designed to change how a room reads as you look at it from different conditions.
How does Carnovsky’s RGB wallpaper work?
The images are built from overlapping red, green and blue graphic layers. In ordinary light, those layers combine into a busy composition that can be difficult to read as separate pictures. Looking through a colored filter—or illuminating the work with colored light—changes the balance of what is visible, so one part of the layered image becomes clearer.
This is an interaction between printed imagery, color and illumination, not a projected image. In a 2011 interview, the artists said viewers sometimes mistook the RGB installation for a projection, but described their approach as layered graphic imagery seen under colored light. The sources explain the artistic principle; they do not establish that every filter perfectly isolates a layer in every installation.

A filter changes which colors reach the eye, making some parts of the overlaid design recede while others stand out. The wall can therefore seem to reveal a different image under different filters or colored lighting. The effect is not simply a hidden picture appearing unchanged: it is a shift in the visual balance of an already layered composition.

The wallpaper format is central to the experience. Rugi described the works as “more as contemporary frescoes than true wallpapers,” and Quintanilla said wallpaper provides architectural scale, allowing a viewer to be immersed in a changing environment. Carnovsky said its first RGB presentation took place in Milan in 2010, during Milan Design Week.
What is RGB Black?
RGB Black follows the same general idea but uses an inverted treatment. In the artists’ description, the background is black and the images appear in negative through colored filters. They also noted that not every image worked in both the original RGB and RGB Black treatments.
