Nathan Sawaya’s life-size cello made from LEGO bricks is a documented sculpture, but the available account does not confirm that it can be played. The Cello Museum reports that Sawaya built his first version from approximately 7,000 standard bricks in 2009, inspired by watching Yo-Yo Ma perform. Its striking cello shape is established; its sound and playability are not.
What is known about Sawaya’s LEGO cello?
Artist Nathan Sawaya created a life-size cello sculpture after seeing a video of cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The Cello Museum says the first version took a few days to build in 2009 and used approximately 7,000 standard LEGO bricks. Those figures describe the museum’s account of that first version, not a verified inventory for every iteration.
Sawaya described the inspiration this way: “One day, I was watching a video of Yo-Yo Ma play the cello, and I just thought it was so beautiful, I wanted to challenge myself to build a life-size cello out of bricks.” The Cello Museum’s account presents the work as an artwork, not as a playable instrument.

Can the sculpture actually be played?
That is not established by the available documentation. The museum account does not describe strings, a bow, a sound-producing mechanism, or a performance on Sawaya’s cello. It is therefore accurate to call it a life-size LEGO cello sculpture, but not to claim that this particular sculpture works as an instrument.
Other projects sometimes described as LEGO cellos do not settle the question: they are separate proposals, classroom activities, or products, not evidence about Sawaya’s sculpture.

How did Sawaya create the cello’s shape?
The challenge was translating a curved instrument into a material made of rectangular bricks. Sawaya singled out the f-holes—the paired openings on the cello’s body—as especially difficult. He explained: “The toughest part was making sure the f-holes looked accurate. I use rectangular bricks in my creations, and of course a cello has some beautiful curves to it, so I had to emulate the curves of the instrument out of little plastic right angles.”
The museum does not provide a complete parts list, structural diagrams, building instructions, dimensions, or details about strings or acoustics. The approximate brick count and the artist’s description of the design problem are the documented construction details; a step-by-step build method cannot be inferred from them.
