A chainless foundation for single crochet—also called foundation single crochet or FSC—makes the starting chain and first row of single crochet together. Begin with two chains, work the first stitch into the second chain from the hook, then make each following stitch into the base chain formed by the previous one.
What a chainless single crochet foundation does
With a conventional start, you make a chain and then crochet the first row into it. FSC combines those two steps into one sequence, so the foundation edge and first row take shape together. Crochet.com calls the technique “Foundation Single Crochet (FSC),” and Berroco also uses “chainless foundation.”

Berroco describes the resulting edge as more flexible than a regular chain foundation. That is practical tutorial guidance, not a measured comparison. FSC can also be convenient for a long starting row, since you build the foundation stitches as you go rather than first making a long chain.

How to crochet foundation single crochet
You need yarn and a crochet hook appropriate for your project. Work the stitches with the pattern’s specified hook and yarn; no universal size is established for this technique.
- Make the setup: Chain 2.
- Start the first stitch: Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over, and pull up a loop. There are now two loops on the hook.
- Make the base chain: Yarn over and pull through one loop. This creates the small chain at the base of the stitch.
- Finish the single crochet: Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook. The first FSC is complete.
- Make the next stitch: Insert the hook into the base chain you just made, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through one loop to make the next base chain; then yarn over and pull through both loops to finish the stitch.
- Continue to the required count: Repeat the previous step, always inserting into the base chain of the stitch just made.
How to find the right insertion point
Each stitch has a base chain and a taller single-crochet body. For the next stitch, insert the hook into that newly formed base chain—not into the top of the single crochet. Crochet.com’s instructions emphasize working into the chain at the base of the previous stitch.

If the first base chain is hard to see, place a stitch marker in it. Berroco recommends this as a way to identify the insertion point. Keep the base chains easy to distinguish as you work; pulling the loop through only one loop is what forms each new base chain.

FSC versus a separate chain and first row

How to match a pattern’s stitch count
When replacing a conventional chain and first row with FSC, make the number of foundation stitches the pattern calls for in its starting row. Do not use a universal subtraction rule: Maggie’s Crochet notes that conversion depends on the pattern’s turning-chain convention. Follow the pattern’s stated stitch count and instructions for whether a turning chain counts as a stitch.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Working into the stitch body: The next insertion point is the base chain, not the top of the single crochet.
- Skipping the one-loop pull-through: Pulling through one loop makes the base chain; pulling through both loops completes the single crochet.
- Guessing the converted count: Use the pattern’s starting-row count and turning-chain directions rather than assuming every pattern handles turning chains the same way.
