If you want a current starting point for choosing paint at The Home Depot, begin with BEHR’s 2026 Color Trends Palette. Its standout is Hidden Gem (N430-6A), a smoky blue-green jade named BEHR’s 2026 Color of the Year. The palette is inspiration, not an objective ranking of every paint brand sold at The Home Depot: these colors are BEHR selections, and BEHR says its associated paint products are exclusive to the retailer.
How to choose among the best Home Depot paint colors
“Best” depends on the room, the surface, the light and how much color you want to see every day. BEHR’s 20-color 2026 palette offers a practical shortlist, but it does not establish which colors are most popular or universally best. Start with the room examples below, then compare your finalists on the actual surface you plan to paint.

- Room and surface: A shade for a wall may feel different on cabinetry, trim or a small accent.
- Undertone: Decide whether you want a warm, cool or balanced effect, and compare adjacent colors in the room.
- Light: Check the color in morning, afternoon and evening light, including the artificial lighting you use most.
- Intensity: Consider whether the color belongs on every wall, one feature wall, cabinetry or a smaller detail.
- Sheen: BEHR recommends flat for interior walls and satin for furniture, doors and baseboards; follow the directions for the specific paint and surface.
BEHR’s color page shows Hidden Gem in different lighting conditions. Use a sample on the intended surface and observe it at several times of day before buying paint for the full project.
Best BEHR colors at The Home Depot, by room and mood
For a bold feature wall or cabinetry: Hidden Gem (N430-6A)
This smoky jade has blue-green character and enough depth to make a feature wall, cabinet run or built-in the room’s focal point. BEHR named it its 2026 Color of the Year. It is a stronger commitment than a neutral, so try it in the space before applying it broadly. Erika Woelfel, BEHR’s vice president of Color and Creative Services, said the company sees “a growing appetite for colors that challenge convention and bring an unexpected sense of wonder to everyday spaces.” That is BEHR’s perspective on the trend, not a promise that the shade will suit every room.
For a living room: Blank Canvas (DC-003)
Blank Canvas is a warm, neutral white used by BEHR in a living-room example. It can provide a quiet backdrop for furnishings and art; warmer trim or darker accents can add definition without making the wall color the main event.

For an airy bedroom: Dainty Lace (MQ3-11)
BEHR presents Dainty Lace as a soft, light bedroom color. It is a useful direction if you want the room to feel bright and understated, but check how it reads beside bedding, flooring and the room’s evening lighting.

For a warm neutral kitchen or trim: Wheat Bread (720C-3)
Wheat Bread is a neutral shown in kitchens and as living-room trim. Consider it when you want a grounded warm neutral rather than a stark white. Pairing it with the darker Cracked Pepper can create contrast in a kitchen or pantry.
For a moody dining room: Curtain Call (N570-5)
Curtain Call is a dusty plum shown in a dining room, including a color-drenched treatment. It offers a more enveloping, dramatic look than a pale neutral. If you like the shade but want less of it, test it on one wall or a smaller surface first.

For an office nook: Terracotta Urn (PPU2-12)

For a darker kitchen accent: Cracked Pepper (PPU18-01)
Cracked Pepper is a dark neutral paired with Wheat Bread in a kitchen and pantry. Try it on lower cabinets or a limited accent surface if you want contrast without making every wall dark.
For a subtle green detail: Urban Nature (S380-3)
BEHR uses this green on bedroom closet doors. Applying it to doors, built-ins or another contained feature is a way to introduce green without turning the whole room into a statement color.

The palette also includes Mocha Ice (N150-1), Iced Copper (S200-3), Dragonfly (PPU12-03), Rumors (MQ1-15), Smoked Tan (HDC-NT-14), Beehive (M270-5), Nocturne Blue (HDC-CL-28), Baronial Brown (N170-7), Rodeo Tan (N240-5) and Ecological (S380-6). Use these as additional candidates when the room examples above do not match your preferred color family; compare them in person rather than assuming a name alone predicts how a shade will look in your lighting.

Interior colors and exterior options are separate choices
BEHR’s 2026 interior trend palette is distinct from its exterior offerings. On March 19, 2026, BEHR named Taupe its 2026 Exterior Stain Color of the Year, describing it as a soft brown with gray undertones. The company also introduced an 18-color Outdoor Accent Color Collection for shutters, trim and entryways; selected shades are available as spray paint. BEHR says the collection and stain are sold exclusively at The Home Depot. Taupe is an exterior stain, not one of the 20 colors in the interior palette.
Color choice is different from paint performance
A color recommendation does not tell you how a particular paint product will hide, resist stains or hold up over time. BEHR-hosted sheets reprint Consumer Reports product information as of January 2026. Consumer Reports gave BEHR Dynasty interior paint an overall score of 96, with hiding rated 5/5 and staining 5/5. It gave BEHR Premium Plus Exterior paint an overall score of 42, with appearance after three years rated 5/5, six years 4/5 and nine years 4/5. These are product-specific ratings, not ratings of Hidden Gem or any other color; the interior and exterior scores are not comparable to each other.
