For a clear, natural wristshot, use soft light, angle the watch to avoid reflections, and focus on the dial. Keep the watch visible and let your sleeve or surroundings add context without competing with it. A phone and available light are enough to get started.
Take the shot: a simple sequence
- Find soft light. Start near a bright window or another bright area where the light is not harsh. Check for strong highlights or shadows across the watch.
- Prepare the watch and sleeve. Clean the watch, move the cuff back, and make sure the hands and important dial details are visible.
- Set a comfortable pose. Turn your wrist so the dial faces the camera without straining your arm. Look for reflections of the phone, photographer, or bright surroundings on the crystal.
- Focus and balance brightness. Tap the dial on your phone screen to focus. If your camera supports exposure adjustment, use it so the dial keeps its detail instead of appearing washed out or too dark. Phone controls differ by device.
- Make small angle changes. Turn the wrist or move the camera slightly, then take several frames. A friend can take the picture if framing it one-handed is awkward.
- Review at full size. Check that the dial is sharp and readable and that glare does not obscure it before sharing.
Control light, focus, and reflections
A watch crystal and glossy dial can reflect the camera, the photographer, or a bright window. First adjust the relative angle of the watch, camera, and light; a small change can move a reflection off the dial. James Stacey of Hodinkee captures the principle simply: “Photography is about little more than light and a moment in time.”
Focus on the dial rather than a sleeve or background. Keep enough brightness to show the face clearly, but avoid exposure that erases dial detail. On phones that offer exposure controls, adjust brightness after setting focus; the exact gesture and interface vary.

A white or bright shirt may also provide convenient fill. These are optional ways to shape light, not requirements for a good wristshot.

Compose for a watch being worn
A wristshot shows scale and setting in a way an isolated product image cannot. Keep most of the watch in frame and make the dial the visual focus. A sleeve, clothing texture, or setting can give the image character, but should not hide the watch or pull attention away from it.

Whichever approach you choose, a legible dial matters. For a wristshot, treat context as supporting detail rather than the subject.

Optional DIY light control
If you want more control than changing position alone provides, white and black foam core boards are a simple DIY option: use white to reflect light into shadows and black to block reflections. They are not necessary; start with your phone, available light, and careful angle adjustments.
