Brush off loose debris, soak the cones in a water-and-white-vinegar solution, rinse them thoroughly, then let them dry completely before crafting. Wet pine cones often close and can open again as they dry. An oven is optional; it can speed drying and reopen cones, but heating changes sap differently from washing and should be closely supervised.
How to clean pine cones for crafts
- Remove loose debris. Shake off needles and use a small soft brush to clear dirt and other visible material.
- Soak the cones. The Ask Extension response from Michigan State University Extension recommends soaking in a 1:1 solution of water and white vinegar. It suggests at least 30 minutes or overnight for blue spruce cones intended for indoor use; this is a source-specific recommendation, not a universal formula for every cone.
- Rinse thoroughly. Rinse away the solution and loosened material.
- Dry completely. Air-dry the cones before bringing them into a craft project. They may be closed after soaking; drying can allow them to open again.
The Extension response addresses concern about bringing insects indoors, but it does not establish a guaranteed sanitation protocol. Cleaning and drying should not be treated as proof that every insect egg, larva, or pathogen has been eliminated.
Should you air-dry or oven-dry pine cones?
Air-drying avoids oven heat but takes longer. If you want to speed drying and help the cones reopen, the Michigan State University Extension response suggests 200°F for one hour. That is a practical suggestion from its answer about blue spruce cones, not a guarantee of sterilization or a schedule validated for every species or oven.

If you use the oven, place the cones on a lined baking sheet, supervise them throughout, and stop if you notice smoke or an unusual smell. Online craft instructions vary in temperature and duration, so avoid combining them into a supposedly universal schedule.

What washing and heating do to sap
Washing and scrubbing may loosen sticky residue. Heating does not remove sap in the same way: the craft guide from Manda Panda Projects says heat melts it into a smoother, shiny glaze that may feel less sticky. If removing sap is your priority, start with brushing and washing rather than expecting oven drying to clean it away.
Will a wet pine cone close?
Yes. A cone may close while wet and open again as it dries. This is a temporary change in shape, so allow it to dry fully before judging whether it has reopened enough for your project.

- A small soft brush for visible dirt and loose debris.
- A lined baking sheet only if you choose the optional oven-drying method.
- Enough drying time for the cones to become completely dry before use.
Pine cones also dry naturally, according to the University of Florida IFAS Extension publication “Drying and Preserving Plant Materials for Decorative Uses.” It notes that removing seeds can reduce later shedding, which may matter for a project where loose seeds would be a nuisance.
