Turn a clean food can into a decorative solar lantern by fitting it with the intact electronics assembly from a small solar garden light. Make and finish the can first, then install the donor light’s panel, battery, LED, and control components together. The result is intended for ambient decoration—not dependable security, emergency, or task lighting.

Materials and tools
- A clean, dry food can with an opening large enough for the donor light; check for sharp edges.
- A small solar garden stake or path light. Keep its original solar panel, battery, LED, and control/charging electronics matched.
- An awl or ice pick and hammer for a punched pattern, or a drill and suitable bits for drainage and mounting holes.
- Eye protection and gloves, plus a stable work surface for working with sheet metal.
- Optional paint or other decoration, and wire or sturdy twine if you plan to hang the lantern.
- Optional adhesive or sealant compatible with the actual metal and plastic surfaces and intended outdoor exposure. A seal does not establish that the finished lantern is waterproof.
Make the can
Clean, inspect, and decorate
Remove the label, wash the can, and let it dry completely. Inspect the rim and any damaged areas; smooth sharp edges before handling the can further. Paint or decorate it now, and allow the finish to dry fully before adding the solar components.
Plan and make the pattern
Draw a simple design on the can, leaving room for the electronics and any mounting points. To help support the wall while punching, one method described in the Instructables LED Tin Can Lantern tutorial is to fill the can with water and freeze it before making holes with an awl or ice pick and hammer. This is an optional technique, not a required step. Keep the can stable, handle it carefully, and protect your eyes and hands. Alternatively, drill a pattern for more regular holes; the Outward Lab project guide describes drilling holes for the lantern.

Add drainage and, if needed, handle holes
Drill small drainage holes in the base so water is less likely to collect inside. If the lantern will hang, make opposite holes near the upper rim for a handle. Smooth or deburr every cut edge before installing the electronics. A fixed lantern does not need handle holes.
Reuse the garden light’s electronics
Open the donor light carefully
Before removing parts, note how the panel, battery holder, LED, sensor or control board, and wires fit together. The University of Illinois Solar Path Light Hack illustrates these parts in a path light. Keep the donor circuit intact where possible: products vary in wiring and battery chemistry, so wire colors are not a reliable generic guide and a different rechargeable battery may not suit the original charging electronics. Fit the panel, LED, and remaining assembly
- Place the solar panel on the top or lid where it can receive daylight. Secure it without covering its light-receiving surface. A compatible seal around the joint may reduce moisture entry, but it does not make the whole lantern weatherproof.
- Position the LED so it shines through the punched or drilled pattern, or through the can opening, depending on your design.
- Secure the battery and control components so they cannot shift. Avoid covering contacts or altering the matched donor circuit.
- If you are hanging the lantern, attach the handle securely. The project guidance provides no load rating, so do not assume a particular hanging capacity.
Charge and test the lantern
- Put the lantern where its panel receives daylight and leave it there for several hours, as the Outward Lab guide directs.
- Check it after dark to see whether the LED turns on.
- If it stays off, check the donor light’s switch and instructions, confirm the panel had daylight exposure, and inspect the original connections. Do this before attempting electrical changes.
The basic operation is straightforward: the panel collects energy, the rechargeable battery stores it, and the light’s electronics control the LED as ambient light falls. Exact circuits and battery types vary by donor product. The available project instructions do not establish a specific runtime, brightness, waterproof rating, service life, cost, or build time for the modified lantern.

Safety and outdoor care
- Sheet metal edges and newly made holes can cut. Smooth the rim and burrs, stabilize the can, and use eye protection and gloves while cutting or punching.
- Drainage holes help limit standing water, but do not prevent all moisture from reaching the electronics. A sealed panel joint is not a validated waterproofing method for the complete craft.
- Keep the original battery and charging/control components together. Different battery chemistries require different charging arrangements; follow the donor manufacturer’s instructions rather than swapping batteries or bypassing the circuit.
