A pyramid pincushion can do more than hold pins: its separate sides provide natural sections for sorting different kinds. Pin Cut Sew Studio’s tutorial suggests using them to keep longer quilting pins apart from shorter piecing or garment-sewing pins, and says the smaller version can sort sewing-machine needles that still have life in them. For a project with a published finished size and detailed materials, AllPeopleQuilt’s separate pincushion pattern finishes at 4 inches square.
What a pyramid pincushion is useful for
The divided sides make it possible to keep pin types separate instead of mixing them in one place. Pin Cut Sew Studio tutorial author Nikki Schreiner describes the sections as a useful feature for organizing longer quilting pins separately from shorter piecing or garment-sewing pins. She also suggests using the smaller cushion to sort partly used sewing-machine needles. These are the maker’s suggested uses, not independently tested performance claims.
As Schreiner puts it, “The added beauty of this particular style of pin cushion is that it’s divided into natural sections.”

The two patterns are not a controlled comparison, and the available descriptions do not establish that one is easier, sturdier or more effective than the other.

Materials for the 4-inch AllPeopleQuilt project
AllPeopleQuilt lists the following supplies for its project:
- A scrap of orange print and small pieces of pink and dark orange prints
- A 12-inch square of dark pink print
- A 5-inch square of cotton batting
- Lightweight tracing paper or another foundation material
- A hand-sewing needle, such as a betweens
- Variegated orange perle cotton
- Crushed walnut shells or polyester fiberfill for stuffing
The source gives these materials for its own 4-inch-square design. It does not establish that the same quantities or supplies apply to the Pin Cut Sew pyramid pattern.

How the AllPeopleQuilt pincushion is assembled
- Foundation-piece the top. Use the fabric pieces and foundation material to construct the top, following the pattern’s cutting and assembly directions.
- Remove the foundation paper. Once the top is pieced, take away the paper foundation.
- Layer and stitch the top. Place the top with the cotton batting and use running stitches around the triangle edges.
- Sew on the backing. Join the top and backing, leaving an opening for turning and stuffing.
- Turn and fill. Turn the piece through the opening and add either crushed walnut shells or polyester fiberfill.
- Close the opening. Slip-stitch it closed by hand.
