Turn a retired bowling ball into a reflective garden globe with either a painted finish or a mosaic of glass pieces. Painting is the simpler route; mosaic work adds texture and detail but calls for careful tile placement, grouting, and a stable stand. For either method, choose outdoor-suitable products and follow their labels for surface preparation, ventilation, drying, and curing.
Choose a finish and plan the display
A bowling ball is a sturdy, reusable base, but its rounded, slick surface affects both preparation and finish. Before starting, decide whether you want a painted design or a tiled surface, and identify the stand or holder the finished ball will use. The intended support matters especially for a mosaic: it can affect how you finish the bottom and how much weight the display must bear.

- Prepare the ball. Clean and prepare the surface according to the primer label. The eHow tutorial recommends a primer intended for plastic; use the instructions for the specific product you buy rather than assuming every ball or primer needs the same preparation.
- Apply primer and paint. Work in a well-ventilated area, apply the primer as directed, then add paint in layers, allowing the stated drying time between coats. Product-specific safety and application directions take precedence over generic tutorial advice.
- Let the finish cure before display. Follow the paint and primer labels for when the ball can be handled or placed outdoors. Set it on a sturdy, compatible holder.
Make a mosaic bowling-ball globe
- Choose tiles and adhesives for the setting. Select decorative glass or tile pieces and an adhesive whose label supports the intended outdoor use. Brown recommends a non-water-soluble silicone for a ball placed outside. Check the actual adhesive label for compatibility, preparation, ventilation, cleanup, and curing requirements.
- Plan around the holder. Decide how the ball will sit before covering its bottom. Brown advises considering the intended stand before finishing that area, so the mosaic does not interfere with a stable fit.
- Attach tiles in manageable sections. Apply silicone and place pieces in small areas of the curved surface; this helps limit sliding while the adhesive sets. Brown says roughing the surface is optional in her experience, but product directions should govern preparation for the adhesive you use.
- Check tile edges and let the adhesive dry. Remove or trim pieces that protrude sharply or rock. Use appropriate eye and hand protection when cutting or handling tile. Brown’s tutorial describes leaving the adhesive overnight before grouting; allow at least the time required by your product label, which may differ.
- Grout and finish. Fill the gaps with grout according to its instructions. Consider a tile sealant for outdoor exposure if its label is suitable for the materials and conditions. Let grout and any sealer dry or cure as directed before moving the globe outdoors.

Use those project descriptions as guidance, not a substitute for the current instructions on your products.

Use reflective materials thoughtfully outdoors
The Mosaic Store article reports that a person experienced a nearby fire after sunlight reflected from an outdoor mirror-covered ball. It does not identify the person or provide an independent investigation, so this is a reported concern, not proof of a general or quantified risk. The article advises against outdoor mirrors. A cautious choice is to avoid exposed mirror surfaces or positioning reflective pieces where they could direct concentrated sunlight toward dry plants, furniture, or other combustible material.
Choose a stable stand and placement
A bowling ball is heavy, and a mosaic adds material; use a holder that fits the finished ball and can support it securely. The eHow tutorial recommends a sturdy stand and suggests a cushioned basket as an alternative when a stand is not sturdy enough. Mayco’s ceramic yard-display project describes staking its pedestal with a rod or filling the base with sand and sealing it. Place the globe where it is less likely to be knocked over, and check that the ball sits securely before leaving it unattended. Make sure the holder does not obstruct the ball’s base or cause it to wobble.
