For the vintage-inspired bauble in AllPeopleQuilt’s project, piece printed fabrics, add faux-chenille bias-tape accents, then sew and turn two ornament shapes. The finished bell is 3 × 4⅛ inches. If you want a simpler project, use felt or woven fabric for a flat or softly stuffed shape instead.

Choose a construction method

Method Construction and finish Best suited to
Pieced bauble with faux-chenille accents Contrasting prints are pieced, interfaced, embellished with raised bias tape, then sewn into a flat or lightly padded shape. A patchwork look with textured trim; involves more steps and may use a sewing machine.
Felt or woven-fabric shape Cut two matching shapes, decorate them, sew around the edge and optionally add stuffing. A simple silhouette with embroidery, beads or other small details; felt has a stable cut edge.
Basic stuffed fabric ornament Sew two fabric pieces with a folded ribbon hanger, leave an opening, add fiberfill and close the seam. A straightforward dimensional shape based on a cookie-cutter outline.

The AllPeopleQuilt project titled Vintage Inspired Fabric Ornaments is specifically a pieced-fabric project with faux-chenille accents, not a generic stuffed bauble. For motif ideas rather than a period-accurate reproduction, The Met Store’s handcrafted holiday ornaments include designs inspired by artworks and historic objects.

Make the pieced bauble

Gather the project materials

  • 10-inch squares of green, white and red print fabrics
  • A 5 × 8-inch rectangle of midweight fusible interfacing
  • Red and lime green Chenille-It Blooming Bias tape
  • A fabric marking pen
  • Light green embroidery floss
  • Needle and thread, plus the project’s finial pattern
  • A chenille brush if you prefer brushing the tape to encourage its raised finish

These quantities and the 3 × 4⅛-inch bell size belong to this pattern. Changing its shape or scale may change the fabric and interfacing needed.

Piece, embellish and sew

  1. Piece the contrasting prints as directed by the AllPeopleQuilt pattern, then fuse the interfacing to the fabric.
  2. Stitch the bias-tape accents onto the pieced fabric. The project describes Chenille-It Blooming Bias tape as sewn in double layers, then washed and dried or fluffed with a chenille brush to make it bloom. Its page identifies ⅜-inch and ⅝-inch widths and 25- or 40-yard rolls; those specifications apply to the named product, not chenille tape generally.
  3. Use the supplied pattern to mark and cut two ornament shapes. Sew around the shape, leaving an opening for turning.
  4. Turn the ornament right side out, hand-sew the opening closed, and attach an embroidery-floss hanger.

Use a simpler felt or fabric shape

Plan the shape and supplies

For a simple bird or other silhouette, the Reynolda House Museum of American Art bird ornament tutorial uses felt and notes that woven fabric can also work. Iron woven fabric before cutting. Gather fabric, scissors, needle and thread or embroidery floss, and a small ribbon for the hanger. Optional stuffing includes polyester fiberfill, wool roving or fabric scraps cut into strips.

Cut matching front and back pieces. Add details before joining them: beads can serve as eyes, or use thread stitches instead. Sew the pieces together, adding stuffing if desired, and leave enough room to attach the hanger and finish the seam neatly. For a basic stuffed shape, Singer Sewing Reference Library’s cookie-cutter ornament directions use two fabric pieces, a folded ribbon hanger, a short seam with an opening, polyester fiberfill and a final closing seam. Paint and pinked edges are optional in that reference.

Add embroidery or a tassel

Embroidery suits felt’s stable edge and gives a small ornament a handmade surface detail. The McLean County Museum of History’s felt-ornament activity presents embroidery as a way to engage with historical craft and sustainability. A separate Gilded Stork felt ornament tutorial lists felt, embroidery thread, twine or ribbon, polyester filling and an optional thread tassel; it also uses glitter, tape and white glue. Treat glitter and glue as optional design choices, since finishes and durability vary.

Finish the hanger and store ornaments carefully

Use embroidery floss for the pieced bauble’s hanger or a small ribbon or cord for a simpler sewn shape. Attach it securely at the top seam or designated finial area so the ornament hangs in the intended orientation.

For storage, keep ornaments with delicate trim or surface details separate to limit abrasion. The Met Store’s ornament care guidance recommends gentle handling, individual storage, and avoiding harsh cleaners or moisture on handcrafted painted, embroidered, enamel and other specialty surfaces. It suggests separation with suitable tissue, soft fabric, bubble wrap or individual boxes. This is general guidance for collectible ornaments, not a tested care instruction for every fabric or trim.
