The Pompeii frescoes that drew attention in April 2024 show Helen and Paris, named Alexandros in a Greek inscription, alongside Cassandra and Apollo. They decorate a black-walled banquet hall in Insula 10 of Regio IX, a room the Italian Ministry of Culture says measures about 15 metres by 6 metres. The Ministry’s announcement does not identify Zeus among the figures.

What frescoes were found in Pompeii?

Announced by Italy’s Ministry of Culture on 11 April 2024, the discovery is a large banquet hall decorated with mythological scenes inspired by the Trojan War. Its paintings and mosaics are described by the Ministry as belonging to Pompeii’s Third Style. The room has black walls and a mosaic floor, and opens onto a courtyard that appears to have served as a service passage.

The Ministry presents the imagery as an invitation to consider heroism, fate and whether destiny can be changed. Those are interpretations of the room’s decoration, rather than proof of what any particular owner or guest thought.

Who is shown in the Pompeii frescoes?

Helen and Paris

One scene shows Helen with Paris. An inscription gives Paris’s Greek name, Alexandros, between the figures. This detail helps identify him; it should not be mistaken for evidence that the room contained a separate newly discovered literary text.

Cassandra and Apollo

Another scene pairs Cassandra with Apollo. In the mythological account summarized by the Ministry, Cassandra is a prophetess whose warnings go unheeded after Apollo curses her. The pairing brings the themes of foreknowledge and fate into the room’s Trojan War subject matter.

Was Zeus depicted?

The Ministry’s announcement identifies Helen, Paris (Alexandros), Cassandra and Apollo. It does not name Zeus as a figure in the frescoes, so the title’s reference to Zeus should not be read as a confirmed identification.

Where was the hall discovered?

The hall lies in Insula 10 of Regio IX, an area of Pompeii where excavation was ongoing when the find was announced in 2024. The Ministry says the work was part of a project to secure the boundary between excavated and unexcavated areas and improve drainage and protection against hydrogeological problems.

Two connected houses fronting Via Nola—a house with a bakery and a fullonica, or laundry—were part of the wider area under excavation. Elaborate reception rooms were emerging behind them. The Ministry’s announcement does not firmly assign this banquet hall to either named house.

What was the banquet hall like?

According to the Ministry, the room is about 15 metres long and 6 metres wide. Its black walls, mosaic floor and painted decoration made it a refined space for dining and conversation. The Ministry says Roman mythological imagery in reception and dining rooms could prompt guests to talk and reflect.

Pompeii Archaeological Park director Gabriel Zuchtriegel offered a practical explanation for the wall colour: he said black walls helped keep lamp smoke from showing. He also said that, after dark, wavering lamplight could make the painted images seem to move. This is his explanation of this room, not a rule that applies to every Roman interior with dark walls.

What else was found nearby?

The Ministry reported a large accumulation of building material beneath an undecorated staircase to the upper floor. It also noted charcoal drawings on unfinished plaster: two pairs of gladiators and what appears to be a large stylized phallus. The identification of that last image is tentative, and these sketches are separate from the hall’s refined mythological paintings.

Is this the same Pompeii discovery as the later ceiling report?

No. The Regio IX banquet hall was announced in April 2024 and is associated with Helen, Paris, Cassandra and Apollo. An Associated Press report published on 24 July 2026 concerned a partly reconstructed frescoed ceiling at the Bakery House, thought to come from an upper-floor banquet hall and featuring Dionysus and Ariadne. It describes separate material, not a newly announced version of the 2024 wall paintings.
