To make sand art on a lightbox, place a shallow tray of dry, fine sand on an illuminated surface, then draw by moving the sand aside to reveal the light. Keep the layer thin, protect the floor from spills, and keep sand and liquids away from electrical parts.
What you need for a sand art lightbox
- An illuminated, stable surface, such as a closed homemade light box or a suitable light table.
- A shallow clear tray to contain the sand. Peter Nosalik’s 2013 Light Table Magic booklet gives an example tray about 4 cm (1½ in) high.
- Dry sand, preferably fine and sieved to remove impurities. Te Papa recommends sieving sand regardless of where it came from.
- Fingers or simple tools such as a stencil, chopstick, paint scraper, or brush.
- A drop sheet or tarpaulin to catch spills, as Te Papa recommends.
Set up the lightbox and sand
- Set the light box or light table on a stable surface in an area that can be swept. Put down a drop sheet or tarp first.
- Place a shallow tray on the illuminated surface. A tray helps contain and store the sand; for a homemade activity box, the University of Alaska Museum of the North also describes pouring sand or flour directly onto a closed light box.
- Add a small amount of dry, sieved sand. Nosalik’s booklet recommends a layer no deeper than about 0.5 cm (¼ in) in its example tray. This is a practical starting point, not a universal specification.
- Switch on the light and check that the setup remains cool. D’Source advises avoiding lights that heat the setup.
Keep sand and liquids away from electrical components. Kaplan gives a specific warning not to use water in or around its electronic sand-table system; that warning applies to that product, so follow the instructions for whichever light source you use.

How to draw in sand on a lightbox
Start with free exploration
Invite the learner to make marks with a finger and notice how moving the sand changes the light. The University of Alaska Museum of the North suggests experimenting with how light shines through the drawings.
Make positive and negative shapes
Push sand aside to uncover the bright surface and create a line or open shape. You can also add sand to build a shape against the illuminated background. Te Papa recommends exploring both positive space (the material added) and negative space (the area revealed by moving it aside), then varying shape, size, texture, and pattern for contrast.

Once the learner has explored freely, offer a simple shape or letter to trace. A stencil, chopstick, paint scraper, or printed template can provide a new way to make marks; fingers are enough to begin.
Choosing a lightbox or sand art table
These setups serve different purposes. A simple lightbox illuminates sand for drawing; a purpose-made kit may add a fitted table and cleanup tools; an interactive projection table is a larger educational system rather than a basic lightbox.

| Setup | What it offers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Simple DIY lightbox | An illuminated surface for finger drawing. D’Source describes a supporting box, glass with a diffusion layer or translucent acrylic, and a light source. | Containment, stability, heat, and careful handling of glass and wiring. D’Source mentions glass of 5 mm or more as its setup guidance; it is not a building-code requirement or safety certification. |
| Purpose-made sand drawing kit | The Sensory Thingz listing includes a table, two sandbags, a dustpan, and a brush. The listing gives dimensions of about 40 × 28 × 9 cm and USB power of 5V/1A; these are vendor specifications, not independent safety testing. | Check the seller’s current listing for availability and included contents, and follow its instructions for power and cleaning. |
| Interactive educational sand table | Kaplan’s Illumination Station is a larger interactive educational system, not simply a lightbox for hand-drawn sand pictures. | Compare its working area, maintenance, power needs, and interactive features with the simpler activity you want. |
For any setup, compare how well the sand is contained, how easy it is to clean and store, which accessories are included, and what power or maintenance it needs. Current prices and stock can change, so check the relevant seller page.

A basic closed light box can be used for finger drawing, but a more involved build introduces electrical, heat, and breakage risks. D’Source describes a box supporting glass with a diffusion layer or translucent acrylic and advises using a light source that does not heat the setup. Its glass-thickness guidance is not a safety certification. Use sound judgment with glass and wiring, especially around children; no independent electrical testing of a DIY build is established here.

Keep the activity manageable by using only a thin layer of dry sand, working over a drop sheet, and placing the sand back in its container after drawing. If a surface or light source is not designed for sand or loose materials, use a separate tray rather than scattering sand directly over it.
