Decorate a clean, smooth-sided glass jar with pressed or flexible leaves, seal them with decoupage medium, and light it with a battery-operated LED tealight. That gives you an autumn glow without placing an open flame inside a jar covered in leaves and craft finish.
What you’ll need
- A clean, smooth-sided glass or Mason jar
- Thin, flexible artificial leaves, or fresh real leaves pressed flat
- Decoupage medium, such as Mod Podge
- A sponge brush or paintbrush
- A battery-operated LED tealight
- Optional ribbon, raffia, or twine for the jar’s neck
Choose leaves and a jar
Artificial leaves
Choose thin leaves that bend easily around the jar rather than stiff, brittle ones. Flexible artificial leaves are ready to use and are easier to smooth against the curved glass.

Real leaves
Pick fresh, colored leaves and press them flat before crafting. Summit Metro Parks recommends pressing leaves for a week; flat leaves are easier to position and less likely to lift at the edges.
Glass surface
A smooth, unridged jar is easiest to decorate because the leaves can lie flat. Ridges and raised patterns make it harder to smooth leaves evenly against the glass.

Apply and seal the leaves
- Clean and dry the jar. Wash it if needed, then make sure the outside is completely dry before applying the medium.
- Work in a small section. Brush a thin layer of decoupage medium onto one area of the jar rather than coating the whole surface at once.
- Place a leaf. Set a leaf onto the wet medium and smooth it from the center toward the edges to push out wrinkles and trapped air.
- Brush over the leaf. Add a coat of medium across the leaf, paying attention to the edges. Repeat the process with the next leaf.
- Choose how much glass to cover. Leave open spaces or use fewer overlapping leaves for more light to pass through. More overlap creates denser coverage and a dimmer glow.
- Add sealing coats and let the finish dry. Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art recommends at least two further coats to secure the edges. Follow the medium’s package directions and allow every coat to dry fully; project drying times vary, so do not rely on one universal time.
- Add optional trim after drying. Tie ribbon, raffia, or twine around the neck of the jar only after the finish is dry.
Light the jar safely
Use a battery-operated LED tealight inside the decorated jar. The leaves and craft medium on the glass are combustible, and the cited project instructions recommend a battery-operated candle. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends flameless candles for home use; its 2025 Candle Safety sheet says, “Use flameless candles in your home. They look and smell like real candles.”
NFPA’s 2025 sheet also says, “Keep candles at least 1 foot (30 centimeters) away from anything that can burn,” and reports that more than half of all candle fires start when burnable items are too close to a candle. That distance is general guidance for candles, not evidence that an open flame is safe inside this decorated jar. Do not use a wax tealight or other open flame in it.
