Start at 8 pt or larger for essential business-card contact details, and make the name larger to create hierarchy. Treat 7 pt as a lower edge—not a guarantee of readability. Typeface, weight, contrast, spacing and print finish all matter, so print the design at actual size before ordering.
What size should business card contact details be?
For ordinary printing, 8 pt or above is a practical starting point. The MOO Team gives the same recommendation in its January 6, 2026 business-card font-size guidance, calling 7 pt the smallest size for ordinary business cards. Adobe’s 2017 stationery guidance also advises against going below 7 pt.
These are practical design recommendations, not a universal industry standard or experimentally established legibility thresholds. A 7 pt line may be readable in one typeface and difficult in another. Use 8 pt or more for phone numbers, email addresses and other details people need to read quickly; increase the size if the design or printing conditions make the text hard to distinguish.
How should you set the type hierarchy?
Give the person’s name more visual prominence than secondary details. You can do that with a larger size, a stronger weight, or both, while keeping contact information clear and comfortably readable. Avoid shrinking essential details simply to preserve decorative elements or fit unnecessary copy.

If the information will not fit at a readable size, shorten the copy, simplify the layout, choose a clearer typeface or consider a larger card format. A compact card is not useful if its contact details cannot be read.
What affects readability besides point size?
- Typeface and x-height: Fonts set at the same point size can look different. A face with a larger lowercase body may appear clearer at small sizes.
- Weight and stroke detail: Very thin strokes and intricate scripts can disappear or become hard to parse. Keep phone numbers and email addresses in a straightforward, sturdy style.
- Contrast and background: Make text stand out from the card stock. Reverse type—light text on a dark background—needs particular care at small sizes.
- Spacing: Crowded letters or lines can make details harder to scan. Leave enough room between characters and separate information into clear groups.
- Stock and finish: Printing and specialty finishes can affect fine details. Follow the selected printer’s specifications rather than assuming a size that works on screen will reproduce well.
MOO recommends a minimum of 10 pt for its Gold Foil and Spot Gloss finishes, noting that small gaps can fill in during the finishing process. That guidance is specific to those MOO finishes; check the requirements for any other printer or finish.

Should business-card type be measured in points or pixels?
Use points for print layout. Pixels are a screen-oriented unit and do not by themselves specify how large type will appear on a physical card. The 2006 SitePoint discussion about business card font size also identifies points as the normal unit for print.

- Set the text in points and keep essential contact details at 8 pt or larger as your starting point. Apply any printer-specific minimums for the chosen finish.
- Print a proof at 100% scale so the card is reproduced at its actual physical size. A screen preview can make small text look more usable than it feels in hand.
- Read the smallest details under ordinary conditions. Check that letters, punctuation and numbers are distinct, including any text reversed out of a dark background.
- If the proof is difficult to read, enlarge the text or revise the typeface, weight, contrast, spacing or amount of copy before sending the card to print.
The SitePoint thread suggested printing samples of common fonts at different sizes. Its replies—including individual preferences ranging from 7 pt to 12 pt—are dated opinions, not a modern consensus. A physical proof remains a more useful check than treating any one number as a guarantee.
