There is no single painting identified by the title “Water Lilies” or “Water Lily Pond.” Claude Monet made many works based on his pond at Giverny, and museums hold distinct paintings with similar titles. The Metropolitan Museum of Art lists one, dated 1916–19, in Gallery 819 at The Met Fifth Avenue; the Museum of Modern Art lists another, dated 1914–26, in Gallery 515. Which location applies depends on the canvas you mean.
Which Monet painting are you looking for?
Start by matching the image, date, or museum collection record—not just the title. A specific painting’s collection page identifies the object; its display listing gives the museum’s stated location. These details distinguish works that might otherwise be confused.

|---|---|---|
| The Metropolitan Museum of Art | Water Lilies, 1916–19 | Gallery 819, The Met Fifth Avenue |
| The Museum of Modern Art | Water Lilies, 1914–26 | Gallery 515, according to MoMA’s gallery page |
Other institutions also have separate Monet works titled Water Lilies, including the National Museum of Western Art and Museum Barberini. The title alone therefore cannot establish which painting a person has in mind.
How to confirm the painting’s location
- Match the image. Compare the painting you have seen or are seeking with the image on the museum’s object record.
- Check the date and collection. Use the record’s date range and holding institution to make sure it is the same canvas.
- Read the museum’s display information. The Met’s record states Gallery 819 at The Met Fifth Avenue for its 1916–19 painting; MoMA’s record and gallery page identify its 1914–26 painting with Gallery 515.
- Recheck before visiting. Gallery and display information can change. A collection page’s current listing is not a guarantee that a work will be on view on a future visit.
Why Monet painted so many water-lily works
Monet’s water-lily paintings grew from the garden he made at Giverny. The Met’s account says he had a pond dug and planted with lilies in 1893, then returned to the subject repeatedly from 1899 onward. Rather than depicting a one-time view, the series reflects sustained attention to the pond and Monet’s changing observations and impressions.

MoMA’s educational publication, Monet’s Water Lilies at The Museum of Modern Art, offers further context on the works and their place in the museum’s collection.
