The right strong magnet for a craft depends on the job, available space and how you’ll attach it—not on a universal “best” size. Neodymium discs are a compact option for projects that need a strong magnet in a small footprint. For a nonmagnetic surface, an adhesive-backed magnet may simplify attachment; flexible magnetic sheets and tape suit projects that call for a cut-to-size format.
What “strong” means for a craft project
A magnet’s usefulness depends on how the finished piece is built and used. A closure for a box, a removable display element and a miniature assembly have different needs. The available sources list magnet types and product specifications, but do not provide standardized tests comparing how well different magnets hold in finished crafts. Choose for the project rather than treating a grade or the word “strong” as a guarantee.

Neodymium discs for compact strength
Neodymium disc magnets are available in multiple sizes and grades, making them a relevant category when a craft needs a compact magnet. K&J Magnetics lists discs in its craft and hobby range. A disc can suit a project with a small, flat space for a magnet, but the catalog does not establish one size as right for every craft. See K&J Magnetics’ craft and hobby magnets.
Adhesive-backed magnets for nonmagnetic surfaces
If the magnet needs to attach to a nonmagnetic material, consider an adhesive-backed option and confirm that its adhesive is suitable for the materials in your project. K&J Magnetics describes adhesive-backed neodymium magnets for craft and display uses, including closures for folders, book covers, boxes and packaging. Its catalog includes discs and blocks. One product example is a 1/2-inch-diameter by 1/16-inch-thick adhesive-backed neodymium disc. The manufacturer lists N52 material, nickel-copper-nickel plating and a maximum operating temperature of 176°F (80°C). These are specifications for that product, not independent performance tests or a recommendation that this size suits every craft. View the manufacturer’s product details and handling instructions.
Blocks for projects with a different footprint
A block may fit a project better than a disc when the construction calls for a rectangular form. The supplier catalog includes both shapes, but the sources do not establish that one shape holds better than the other in all craft situations. Match the magnet’s dimensions to its intended position and the materials around it.

Flexible sheets and tape for cut-to-size projects
Magnetic sheets and tape offer flexible formats that can be cut to suit some craft layouts; stick-on magnets and ceramic discs are other options listed by craft retailer Hobbycraft. The retailer’s listings do not provide controlled comparisons of their holding strength against neodymium magnets, so treat the formats as alternatives to assess for your particular project, not as equivalent-strength substitutes. How to choose the right magnet
- Define the job. Decide whether the magnet is for a closure, removable attachment, model or miniature assembly, display, or decoration.
- Measure the available space. Compare the project’s dimensions with the magnet’s diameter and thickness, or its length, width and thickness for a block. Choose a form that fits the construction.
- Check the attachment surface. For a nonmagnetic substrate, look at adhesive-backed options and verify adhesive compatibility with the materials involved. Do not assume the magnet will bond reliably to every surface.
- Consider how the finished piece will be used. A catalog grade or product description alone does not guarantee holding behavior in your assembled craft. The reviewed sources do not provide standardized head-to-head results across products and use conditions.
- Choose a format that suits the layout. Consider a disc or block for a specific placement, or a flexible sheet or tape when a cut-to-size format is useful.
- Plan for safe handling and storage. Keep strong magnets away from children and prevent loose magnets from being accessible to anyone who might swallow them.
Safety: prevent pinches, breakage and ingestion
Neodymium magnets can snap together forcefully, pinch fingers and shatter on impact. Neomagnete’s handling instructions warn that two magnets may cause blood blisters, break a finger or shatter when they snap together, and instruct users to keep children away from magnets. Follow the manufacturer’s handling guidance for the specific product, keep magnets controlled while assembling a project and store loose pieces securely.

Ingestion is a separate serious hazard: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s magnet page lists recalls and safety notices about high-powered magnet ingestion, including warnings of serious injury or death. That regulator context does not mean every craft magnet has identical risk; it does make secure storage and careful supervision important wherever small magnets could be swallowed.
